Re: Somerset v South Yorkshire

September 21 2016, 2:12 PM

Leg Glance: "3 ducks from the top 4. Not the application, determination effort or commitment required. The bowlers must be sick of seeing this game after game."

For me, it is not about application, determination, effort and commitment. It is questionable ability, exposed when the heat is really on and the opposition is of high quality.

The number of batting points achieved by the team this year is deceptive. Some were secured by Root and Bairstow early on in the season, some have been secured by lower order batsmen.

In reality, the batting resources in the club are dreadful and we have been 3 or 4 for not much over and over again this season (and last).

Lyth and Lees are hit and miss. Ballance is shaky with a flawed technique. Gale is averaging 20 and even last year usually failed. Leaning is averaging 17. No-one from the second string is deemed good enough for the first team.

Think about it. We couldn't field any more than 4 specialist batsmen in this game, because we did not feel that Leaning or second team batsmen would get any more runs than the likes of Plunkett and Willey. And, as someone mentions, even Galey was a questionable selection ahead of Plunkett on batting alone and Ballance is heading into another slump.

This is a truly shocking state of affairs for a club of our stature, even taking into account the absence of Lehmann and Jonny (I don't count Root, as we know his availability is a bonus).

Do we have the money to fix this over the winter, the opportunity to do so having been missed last winter?

Suspect Gale will make his own mind up at the end of the game.

A stunning start to our innings. When was the last time three of our top order batsmen got ducks? To win from here would rank as one of the great comebacks in team history.

Can we avoid the follow on? Looking unlikely.

But is anyone really surprised by this start? That is the worst thing.

Think we all knew deep down that our allowed batting line up wouldn't be good enough against their test playing bowlers,,but lets keep hoping/positive you never know.

You should be grateful you didn't waste £18 to get in at lunch.

ECT , I cannot argue with your thoughts because the scoreboard backs you up.

I suppose another factor that goes against Lyth & Lees, based on their 1000 plus runs this year, is when they get them and,by and large, when the chips are down, so are the wickets.

That strikes me as being down to application as much as anything but those runs paper over the cracks of a much deeper malaise as outined by you.

We have some very difficult decisions to make this winter-coach, captain, top order.

Middlesex victory speech

September 21 2016, 2:30 PM

IF this fiasco plays out as it looks like it will, at least we all know the opening line of the Middlesex captain's victory speech:

"I would like to thank the ECB and in particular Andrew Strauss and Trevor Bayliss for helping to make this possible..."

"Oh, and a special thanks to the Australian Cricket Board for taking our overseas player and most consistent batsmen off our hands with one match to play..."

Dropped catches and poor top order batting have failed us for most of the season. Agree, it must be the end for Gale but Lees and Ballance need hard work to improve footwork. Lyth, as usual, played beautifully but then played loose block - familiar story. Frankly, we do not deserve to win the Championship, despite great efforts by our seam bowlers to keep us in the hunt. Agree ECB has contributed to the inevitable outcome.

We should look closer to home as to who Middlesex skipper should be thanking. Starting with our numbers 2 3 and 4 as all would have played even if Root Bairstow and Lehmann available

I agree, Leg Glance, Lyth and Lees have mainly traded on easier situations. Not always, by any means, but it requires taking into account in any analysis of their seasons.

This game has shown the serious lack of strength in depth of our batting throughout the club, the fact that we have nobody knocking on the door from the second team is a damning indictment of the situation. We need an overseas batter that is here all season and we also need to find a reliable, consistant domestic player who will average 40. The top order has flattered to decieve all season, Gale has gone and it is probably time for him to call it a day, Leaning misfired all year, Ballance looks like an accident waiting to happen and Lehmann, Head & Williamson came and went way too quickly which is never good for stability. The only two with any kind of consistancy is Lyth and Lees but even these two have very flakey techniquies against the new ball and i am far from convinced about Lees as an opener. We can forget about seeing Root and Bairstow next season so we have to find the answers somewhere others it could well be a battle at the other end of the table next year. We can't keep relying on our band of 30-something bowlers to keep bailing us out of the brown stuff week after week.

Disgraceful again (Lyth aside) from our top order, 3 bloody ducks amongst those so called professionals.

I agree, Third Umpire, the reason why we were so upset about the ECB is that we knew we needed him to try to save us.

clutching at straws now, but if notts (and us) can avoid the follow on we still have a chance in a 4th innings run chase.

Starter for 10 about 2017:

Galey - retire (with, of course, truly heartfelt thanks from the supporters for all he has done for the county)
Leaning - put out on loan to free up resources
Ballance - put out on loan (if we need to free up resources further)
Rhodes - another loan spell?

Full season overseas batsman
New batting signings, including proper competition for Lyth and Lees

It has all got too cosy. Teams often go in cycles, with coziness a factor in the down turn of the cycle. Time to start a new cycle in my view.

Bang on East Coast. Time for a lot of change next season way too much deadwood.
