From 20/3 and 100/5 that's a very good recovery. Showing the value of our long tail. If we can get upto 300 tomorrow then we're ahead of the game.

Edit: I've got that a**e about face............we of course have a short tail! A long tail would be the days of Caddick, Mullally, Tufnell, Giddins.

The tale is almost as long as War and Peace, but in no way can Adil be described as a tale-ender!

Terrific cricket to watch, I thought, after much turgid stuff on slow pitches during the summer. Joe was brilliant, Moeen excellent - you can't say he was 'lucky' to survive three lbw decisions because they simply weren't out, nowhere near out.

Jonny batted really well, and responsibly, so did Stokes, if rather briefly, and Woakes has done as well as anyone, apart from Joe, who is a complete class apart.

280 should be enough, and I only hope England do not regret the non-selection of Leach.

Actually, a large part of me hopes they DO live to regret their lack of knowledge of County cricket, but they won't change, nor admit their fault.

[And EYT has corrected his spelling of 'tale/tail', above. Spoilsport!]

Umpire Dharmasena must have been having some sort of muscle spasm when he kept giving Moeen out. Two of them were clearly not out to the average tv viewer even before the slow motion replay. Terrible umpiring.

Really pleased for the Yorkshire players.

The ones that have been rested in First Class cricket showing why it was needed and getting good scores. Ballance the lowest scorer from the Yorkshire 3 that got out and he played in first class cricket recently

Most Yorks supporters who've watched Ballance in the past 6 months are surprised that he's been picked for England at all.

I don't think the performances thus far offer compelling evidence either for or against resting players.

All my comments on this matter have been tongue in cheek, others seem to have taken them seriously.

Phil doesn't like reading the comments made about his mate Rashid, many didn't like Rashid's selfish attitude which won't be forgotten in a hurry.

From Tim Bresnan (from the report on the OS re his elbow op.)

“They are the games you want to play in. At the start of the year, if you asked any County cricketer if they could play in the last game of the season to win the Championship, they would. It’s got to be the closest thing to a cup final."

Not Adil it seems!!

Are the wickets currently being prepared in the sub-continent really good for test cricket?
Surely there has to be a better balance between bat & ball?

What's wrong with them?
Should be asking if the players are good enough for test cricket on the sub continent. Ballance was like a fish up a tree this morning. Typified by two full tosses he received which he could only bunt away for singles.

This now a terrific test match and pitch is a big part of that, surely.

It's called test cricket because it's a test, can't expect batsman friendly pitches everywhere, great partnership from Stokes & Bairstow, think could be the end of Ballance's test career for the time being

Maybe but when Somerset did this everyone on here called "foul".

Said on TMS that in 2016 tests England's two highest averaging partnerships have been for the 6th then the 7th wicket. Part coz of good depth, part coz of fragile top order, i guess. Bit like another team we know.

What England are doing picking Ballance is anyone's guess. They are going to ruin him for ever at this rate.

Ballance might end up being our permanent 4 day captain.

Recently caved in to family pressure and got SKY- so I've actually seen lots of this test as well as listened to it. What a cracking contest, really enjoyed it. Still struggle to leave the comfort of the bedside wireless and go downstairs at 4.30am though.
Have to say Bairstow has had a very impressive game all round. Fear for Balance though.
As JB said after play today, England should have enough- but another 50 would give Cook a bit more freedom to pressure batsmen.
I loved the bloke in the crowd with the parrot on his shoulder. Could just imagine how the Headingley stewards would react...

Three gripping days on a brilliant pitch. You wouldn't want ALL matches to be played on bunsens, but this is hugely preferable to the usual sub-continental or Caribbean pudding. The class players come through the difficulties, not only the spinners who are favoured, but also the batsmen and pace bowlers who are good enough to find a way.

Stokes has confirmed himself a true successor to Botham and Flintoff, and Jonny B was superb behind the stumps (fingers crossed!) as well as with the bat.

Oddly, the pressure is on the spinner, who is expected to succeed. I still think Leach should be there. Did people really criticise Somerset for finally preparing an interesting pitch after decades of flat 'uns?

Dear Spanish. Try the record function. You get to sleep in and you can fast forward through the breaks in play
.
