Its a sad state of affairs when they increase the nominations to 16 - and we still cant get a single cricketer on the short list.....?

I would have thought Joe or Jonny might have made the long list...
Just goes to show how far cricket has fallen in the public consciousness.

Would have being very difficult in an Olympic year for any cricketer to make it you'd have to feel. They only ever come into consideration in Ashes years too, don't they?

When World Champions like Anthony Joshua, Carl Frampton and TdeF winner Chris Froome don't make the shortlist am not sure any cricketer can have too many complaints.

Alistair Brownlee deserves it.

If helping your brother over the finishing line was the main criteria!

Travesty if Murray The GOAT British sportsman doesn't hack up.

Murray won it last year and in 2013. Triathlon also struggles to be acknowledged, Alistair won back to back Olympic titles this year.

This is a new year and Murray has been the best sportsman.

Brownlee will do well because of helping his brother, the Strictly, Im a celeb reality crowd will lap up his story. But won't be based on his achievements as a Triathlete.

Agreed, Murray is the GOAT and it wouldn't surprise me if he won it next year aswell as this.

Federer and Nadal fading away has helped him reach the levels he has.

Since it's based on achievement, not personality then Murray (quite rightly) should be a shoo-in.

Sorry, but what does GOAT stand for.

It is time it was re-named and "personality" got rid off and replaced by "achievment". That would rule out 90% of the candidates.

Can't compare slams prior to the open era.

If you want to denounce his achievements then that's up to you.

Perfectly happy to say that slams when only amateurs could compete are not comparable to modern day.

Like saying the BDO darts world champs is on a par with PDC. If you believe that then fair play.

Phil Taylor has won 16 world titles, 2 of them were with the BDO when all the best players were competing at that time, once the defection happened then i don't personally class BDO titles as world titles.

Murray would have my vote for the most graceless and obnoxious sportsman.

Surely Danny Willett's was the most impressive English achievement of 2016 - I do know that the B in BBC counts for British - Olympics included. Didn't the Brownlies win gold and silver? The helping over the line was in another competition; astonishing that people seem to have found something sinister in it.

Bring on YEXIT.
