Yeah just seen. Didn't know they was going to be an announcement. Another option with the gloves in the shorter formats

As long as he avoids selection for the 50 over competition he should be available throughout the summer.

Regardless of quality the number 1 priority was an overseas player to be regularly available.

He's currently batting 5 for Australia.

Sounds like he will be keeping in one dayers. Means Hodd will be keeper for CC. Sounds quite a logical move under the circumstances.

I don't know what his ambitions are regarding wicketkeeper but why couldn't he keep in the CC? Australia struggling for a keeper at the moment with Wade and Neville so there could be a more permanent place in the side in a Bairstow type role.

Hope we've signed a gem. I haven't been watching the current Aus v Pak matches but will watch the next one to have a look at our boy.

He's done well in the two matches so far.

Looks a decent Championship signing.

Need a couple more T20 options though.

I see he played against us, for Leics 2nd XI, in 2011.

Of our current staff, Lyth, Lees and Wainman played in that game, which resulted in a tie. I wonder if they remember him?

I agree with Dwight: Handscomb looks an excellent addition for the Championship as an up-and-coming Test batsman who should be available for almost the whole season, however his white ball performances both in Australia and over here (142 runs in 11 T20 innings with a high score of 39 for Gloucestershire last year) leave something to be desired at this stage so I would hope we would look for a second overseas for the T20.

Spotted the UK passport but wasn't sure if this is advantageous to us (other than making work permit issues easier)

Good signing overall I think, a batsman-wk which is what those who see us as Hodd-carriers wanted. However, how does that t20 record compare with the much maligned Andy?

Good signing for the CC and 50 over comp., unless he gets picked for the IPl, which would rule him out till the end of May.

Not to sure if he is the answer in T20. I would be looking for two additional T20 specialists specifically for that competition.

EDIT------Early days but an average of 83 in tests!! His T20 stats are not to shabby either, assuming he bats 6, 7 or 8.

Batting and fielding averages
Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 4s 6s Ct St
Tests 3 5 2 249 105 83.00 438 56.84 1 2 28 1 3 0
First-class 65 107 7 4150 215 41.50 7657 54.19 10 26 521 12 97 4
List A 51 46 10 1130 72 31.38 1521 74.29 0 5 85 14 44 2
Twenty20 35 29 12 460 103* 27.05 410 112.19 1 1 28 11 17 4

Stats from Cricinfo.

Strike rate of 112 is very low by modern T20 standards; if all the batsmen went at that rate the team score would only be 134 (plus extras). The fact that he has a Big Bash century to his name shows he is clearly capable but his stats to date are poor (in 50 over cricket as well).

It might be a good idea to state categorically that he can, has and does keep wicket, particularly in the one day formats.

There was an awful lot of words written about Travis Head last year saying that he could keep wicket but, it transpired, he hadn't done so since his days as a youth.

Reasonably pleased with the overseas signature of Handscomb for the 1st half of 2017, solid First Class stats and his List A figures are not too shabby. Most decent List A overseas signings are likely to be playing in the IPL.

Chances are Yorkshire will need Overseas cover in September for the 4 final CC games as Handscombe is likely to feature in the Bangladesh home test series and rejoin his State side. Hopefully Kane Williamson can fill that void.

You do wonder if Yorkshire will pass on Williamson as a short term fix this time around. Remember that in 2016, he asked to be left out due to fatigue - it couldn't be helped but less than ideal when a player is only available for a limited number of games in the first place. He captains in all three formats for New Zealand, and as a smaller test playing nation, I suspect he has to do more of the back room stuff than someone like Cook. Maybe this is the year he eases off a bit - in the interests of his long term career.

I suspect we've seen the last of Williamson.
