Pretty poor tbh in two innings Lyth, Root and Bairstow can only muster 33 runs between them, really not good enough for such seasoned and experienced professionals.

At this rate we might be seeing more of Joe and Jonny!

at the end of this game only two people can hold there head up with pride gb bc the rest have been a shambles on a wicket that didn't give much help to the bowlers very poor , will have to play better or in for a relegation battle .

Hard to see anything but another resounding defeat coming up here.
Increasingly, we look like relegation candidates.
Yet again we lose a wicket just before the new ball is due & then the new ball gets more.
Abbott has been an excellent signing for them.

The crucial wicket was Hanscomb just before the new ball due. That meant Jonny in, who has not batted for 4 months against Abbott with a shiny new cherry, with the very predictable result. If only Hanscomb had lasted a couple more overs.

Brilliant England policy - resting players!! When will they ever learn that batsmen need to be batting.

I tipped us to finish 6th and still think we will. Warks and Essex are worse than us I hope

We should be able to pull off a draw from here.

Yes, a couple more hours of batting and we are probably home and dry. That should be possible you would think.

Re Root and Bairstow, yes it is disappointing that both of them have failed, but I'm not sure that their failures after one game warrants personal criticism.

Anyone can fail in their first game of the season. They don't want to fail. They aren't doing it on purpose. Blame lack of cricket, blame the ECB, blame dodgy decisions, blame the new ball, blame lack of form. Don't blame them personally.

I'm starting to get that cold, clammy feeling - and not just because we are staring defeat in the face, but because it could get worse.

Let's face it, without our captain's superlative early season batting form Yorkshire could well be 0-3 and staring relegation in the face. And he is absolutely back in the England frame.

Dear Strauss and Baylis

England currently 18-4 in their first test of the season. More time in the middle needed.

Slightly confused Martin, where is the personal criticism narrative directed at Bairstow and Root? People are offering up their opinions which constitutes for an engaging and diverse forum.

Dreadful return from the two stars, but I don't think it says anything negative about their attitude or commitment. Nor does it really say anything clear about the policy of giving them a match or two with their county. Last year they came back and put every bowler to the sword.

The difference being that last year they'd been playing cricket whereas this year they're coming in pretty cold

I wish Bairstow and Root had scored more runs but have to admit a reason I love cricket and sport is that no one could have predicted them scoring only 18 between then in this game.

Think a bit of rain is forecast this afternoon and will predict draw but not confidently. We really don't deserve it.
