With that wicket, think we are still some way off. Another 15 overs batting is probably needed you would think, to make the game absolutely safe.

Tim, just when I thought it would be safe to leave the house.

Comforting to have Adil coming in at 8.

At 'another place', Somerset have collapsed from 78 for 2 to 129 for 8. Lancs on the brink in (freezing) evening sunshine.

Another example of an immensely talented batting team collapsing, as teams have since the year dot, being made up of human beings.

129 for 9, as I type. Wow. The damage is being done by Jordan Clark, who has a career bowling average around 40.

Dear Gary

I noted with interest your shed load of runs for your county and it really will not do

Therefore we're calling you up to the England squad to batter (no pun intended) your confidence and shaft Yorkshire royally

Yours A Strauss

PS: You can bring that Coad fellow with you (silly name, anyway) so we can find a fault with his action, as we did with that Somerset bounder Leach.

Pressure off

April 24 2017, 4:45 PM

After all that pressure it looks like Gary is relaxing a little bit.

A case of Hampshire's bowling not being good enough and an immense effort from our Captain. Hope he beats his best of 210 and it's a n.o to push his average within touching distance of 50.

I may stand up and cheer rather than clap his entry at Trent Bridge and I might even repeat it at Headingley next week.

What a star - and back to his best - the ability to accelerate effortlessly to get his 200 before shaking hands Well done. Now praying that Essex can hold on.

Bloody magnificent Gary!! 210 his highest score, strange he did not bat on!!

On current form we have 3 players who are shoe-ins for our next match - GB, BC & AH.

As for the rest - a lot of improvement needed and one or two of them could be playing for the seconds.

The pressure of captaincy seems to sit lightly on his shoulders..

Absolutely terrific individual contribution. Well done Gary.

Stuart would the A H in your next team be Andrew Hodd.

Yes, correct. Not a lot of choice or replacements in his case though.

Absolutely terrific display today, especially from Ballance. Never in doubt 😜

Never doubt this Yorkshire team. We battled brilliantly to make a defeat that at one point looked inevitable look very unlikely, and Hampshire were denied a victory due to this terrific grit and determination. Hampshire have beaten us, outplayed Middlesex then ourselves again, so are clearly a good team.

As for 'relegation contenders' comments, I would say everyone in the league is for now a relegation contender as there's not much between the teams in all honesty, and a quarter of the teams in the league go down.

Bad light at Lord's; Middlesex look to be really regretting not making Essex follow on

On to one-day stuff now. My team against Notts and Lancs would be 11 of:
Lyth
Lees
Root
Ballance
Handscomb
Bairstow
Bresnan
Willey
Plunkett
Rashid
Rafiq
Coad

We've tended to use two spinners in one-day cricket and need 4 seamers really for more options. So there's probably 1 batsman too many in that team. Don't know who we'd drop; Lyth is most out of form player, but was terrific in one-day cricket last year. We could drop one of the openers and open with Willey, but it's a tough choice

My team for the first three 1 day matches would be

Lyth or Lees, Willey, Root, Hanscomb, Ballance, Bairstow, Leaning, Plunkett, Bresnan, Rashid, Fisher.

Then we need to find replacements for Root, Bairstow, Willey, Plunkett & Rashid so then----

Lyth, Lees, Hanscomb, Ballance, Leaning, Rhodes, Bresnan, Hodd, Waite, Rafiq, Fisher

Saving Coad for the 4 day stuff, we do not want to overwork him.

I really hope Willey does not open in 50 over cricket! Has he ever done it? Pinch hitter in T20, yes, but no thanks in the RL Cup. Lyth and Lees for me.

I thought he did every match when he was at Northants, but could be mistaken.
