Yorkshire’s 13-man squad to face Notts Outlaws:
Gary Ballance (Captain), Jonny Bairstow (Wicketkeeper), Tim Bresnan, Matthew Fisher, Peter Handscomb, Jack Leaning, Adam Lyth, Liam Plunkett, Azeem Rafiq, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Matthew Waite, David Willey.

No Lees, so last years 1 day Captain not in the team. Waite & Rafiq to miss out??

Going to predict Fisher and Rafiq to miss out looking at that squad.
Sure Lees will be back when the England players depart us, but of squad rotation.

Getting the train down to this one as the weather looks cool but dry.
Trent Bridge is one of my favourite cricket grounds.
Should be a decent number of well known players from each side if Hales, Broad and Ball are selected for Notts.

Looking forward to this it's virtually a home game for me.

It should be a good close game. Broad, Ball, Gurney & Pattinson looks a very tasty bowling attack and ours is not to shabby with Bresnan, Willey, Plunkett, Fisher & Rashid.

Batting wise, if our Internationals hit form we have the edge, but Hales can be devastating on his day.

Do we think they'll go with Willey opening? I don't fancy him doing it in this format. That should guarantee him a score!

Bairtsow to open?

Lyth
Bairstow
Root
Ballance
Handscomb
Leaning
Bresnan
Willey
Plunkett
Rashid
Fisher

If Willey opens then Bairstow or Handscomb would be at 6. Too low for Bairstow and Handscomb wouldn't offer much value there. Would rather play Waite ahead of Handscomb if Willey opens.

The opener will be.....

April 27 2017, 5:22 PM

Bairstow alongside Lyth, somebody suggested this to me a couple of days of go and I laughed it off!

Seems harsh on Lees, but his 50 over form last year was poor and therefore Leaning gets the nod, and probably needs stroking at the moment, ahead of him with JB taking on a new role. Lees will bounce back I expect.

Would Root open?

Lyth
Root
Handscomb
Ballance
Bairstow
Leaning/Waite
Bresnan
Rashid
Plunkett
Willey
Fisher/Waite

A lot of batting in the tail, can see Plunkett and Willey being promoted for a slog if theres a few overs left. Maybe Leaning misses out if they think they have enough batting in Bresnan, Rashid & Waite.

Surprised to see Lees out of the squad, he'd be ahead of Leaning for me. Also interesting that Waite appears to have moved ahead of Rhodes.

Do we know how fit Bres is to bowl? - following the fall he sustained when taking his excellent C&B late in the home CC game v Hampshire he's hardly bowled (Warks) and had usually poor figures at Southampton.

From the squad and assuming Bres is 100% with his bowling, I'd leave out Waite and Fisher although that means at least 20 overs of spin. If the wicket is 'green' Fisher for Rafiq.

Wonder if Billy Root opposing his big brother?

I'd open with Willey and give it a go from the off.

Lees will have been rested by the ECB.....

They might go try get off to a flyer with an opening pair of Lyth and Waite. Think there should be enough solid batting to follow and hopefully a couple of finishers.

Lyth and Root can bowl a few overs each if required.

My team:

Lyth
Waite
Root
Handscomb
Ballance
Bairstow
Bresnan
Willey
Rashid
Plunkett
Fisher

If they go with Leaning rather than Waite then Willey to open.

Always the chance they might both fail again but it's a chance I would certainly take.

I am not saying it's a wrong decision, but I'm surprised at Lees' omission. Surely they can't be thinking of using a tailender to open against Broad, Pattinson and Ball, can they? Perhaps one of the four Test stars is earmarked to play their three.

But, as usual, I'm happy with the batting, and the depth of the batting, whilst worrying about our thin bowling resources. It looks like pop-guns v howitzers in that department.

Top class squad, I'd leave out Leaning and Rafiq I think.

Waite and Fisher are the two I'm really looking forward to seeing

Popguns v Howitzers!

I think Notts have a decent attack but we have 3 current England bowlers just picked for the Champions Trophy.

Lot of hype over Pattinson but he's been around a long time now and is very in and out.

Broad, Ball, Gurney and Fletcher didn't manage to blow Worcestershire out of the water.

Re: RLODC v Notts pre-match thread

It's not Fletcher and Gurney I'm worried about! Broad is one of the world's great bowlers, so is Pattinson if he's fit and firing, and Ball bowled beautifully against us last year in the CC, including getting Root.

Willey has been known to swing the new white ball, and Plunkett can be fast, though it's a couple of years since we've seen that. Rashid should be our one clear advantage, unless he's suffering from Ross Frozen Fingers. He bowled pretty well in the cold at Edgbaston.

Lumb is coming off a ton yesterday, and Billy Root got runs too. Should be interesting, shame it's not the one televised.

Other former players round the circuit: Rudolph got a hundred for Glamorgan, Hannon-Dalby 3 cheap wickets for Warwickshire, and Shahzad took two for Sussex, but did go for 88 off 9 overs! Anyone know what's happened to Ollie Robinson, by the way?

Lees couldn't get it off the square in this competition last season. Whether that was the burden of captaincy or not, he rightly misses out whilst Root and Bairstow are around.

No real argument with that, except it's a shame to drop Alex immediately after a good innings, albeit in the CC in a situation that (sadly) cannot happen in one-day cricket.

But I do feel you need specialist opening batsmen to face top bowlers in an English April.
