Will Ballance get an England recall?

Speculation is increasing that Gary Ballance is in line for an England recall. His amazing form, and the fact that Yorkshire's Joe Root is now the England captain, must certainly have enhanced the Yorkshire captain's England prospects.

Given Yorkshire's fragile top order batting lineup, would losing our captain and top scorer put paid to our Championship winning chances...or worse?

I don't see where there's a position for him in the set up at present.

England's Test top 6 still looks like a work in progress, as they showed in the winter. Wouldn't be surprised to see him shoved in at no.3 again, in fact I think it's inevitable.

Surely England's top six is Hameed, Jennings, Cook, Root, Stokes, Bairstow.

It will need one of them to fail for Ballance to get a recall.

And yes, it would put paid to our Championship winning chances, fragile as they are anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me if Strauss called up Ballance for England when Yorkshire are due to play Middlesex.

I think you're missing one player, Stu. With Stokes one of the 4 seam bowlers, plus Ali, there's room for another batsman - or a specialist wicket-keeper, if such still exists.

Cook, Hameed, Jennings, Root, batsman, Stokes, Bairstow, Ali, Woakes/Wood, Broad, Anderson.

Options at 5: Ballance, Bell, Vince, Duckett, Buttler, perhaps others: or Bairstow at 5 and a real keeper at 7 or 8 (which they won't do, because there are no wicket-keeping stats kept. There's no proof that Knott was better than Bairstow, and there IS proof that Jonny was the better batsman.)

I would think that if they picked Ballance when he was hopelessly out of form last season, he's a nailed on certainty now.

The other worry would be the early-season form of Hameed; Jennings to open, which could free up yet another middle-order spot. Or Lyth to open, if he hits form just at the right (wrong) time.

Perhaps we should be cheering Hameed on, tomorrow.

The England hierarchy like Ballance which is why they rushed him back. Question is whether they've (wrongly) decided that he is a busted flush.

I can see England going back to Ballance towards the latter end of the season if Hameed or Jennings fail badly, or if one of Root, Cook or Bairstow picks up an injury.

If he continues in such good form I can quite imagine he would be in line for the ashes squad.

Can't see England wanting Bairstow to bat as low as 7 and they like Stokes at 6 so I think that top 6 is pretty much settled. Don't need an extra batsman with Ali and Woakes at 7 and 8. I'd see it as:
Cook
Hameed
Jennings
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Wood
Anderson

Daves post sums up my view. There is a spot at 5. The question is:

1: Do they play the "genuine" keeper at 7 so Bairstow playa at a batsman?
2: Do they fit a proper spinner in the side, moving Ali up to 5?
3: Do they go for the most inform batsman who they have tried previously (Ballance, Vince)
4: Do they go for someone new who looks the part (Livingstone, Clarke)

My guess is we are gearing towards Australia. That rules out 2 spinners. Buttler is no better a keeper than Bairstow and is not as good a bat as any of those mentioned.

That means we DO need a number 5 bat, especially with the youthful Hameed and Jennings.

My guess is they will pick Balance, Vince or Livingstone.

Balance has found his form which is great but he looked to have his technique found out. I haven't seen him live so can't comment if he has changed anything. I worry Aussie pace will find him out as Rabada may this summer.

I would personally give Vince a second chance if he keeps up his form.

I didn't like the look of the side last winter when they had Buttler playing at 7 just as a specialist batsman. We seem to be in an era of allrounders with Stokes, Ali and Bairstow in the top 6 at the time so they could afford to but just doesn't look right a specialist batsman as low as 7.

I'm not convinced that Ballance was found out. He was recalled too early. With such an unusual technique, the slightest blip makes him look pretty terrible at the crease. When he is out of form he gets out in different ways to most players. It makes him look a chump. So far this season he has played against some skilled players (notably Abbott) who should be able to "find him out" - the fact that they haven't suggests to me that he is back to peak form.

I'm struggling to see who to pick in front of him. Those dropped before him like Vince and Bell don't seem any further on and the new kids on the block like Livingstone would give a vey inexperienced top order when you include Hameed and Jennings in the top 3.

On the other hand, if there is to be someone new, they'll want them to have a few tests before the Ashes. A difficult one, I must admit, if I was them I'd go for Gary, but the temptation to try Livingstone is strong.

And yes, the impact on our batting would be dreadful.
