No squad news yet, but I assume the ECB 5 are back, and Lees, Leaning, Rafiq, Carver & Fisher drop out.

Team

Lyth
Bairstow
Root
Hanscombe
Ballance
Waite
Bresnan
Plunkett
Rashid
Willey
Coad

6 to 10 in any order depending on whether we need the "hitters" or the "nurdlers" in.

EDIT ----- Whoops!! - another posting on another thread and no Bresnan.

Lyth
Bairstow
Root
Handscomb
Ballance
Rashid
Waite
Plunkett
Willey
Fisher
Coad.

Leaning
Rafiq to miss out for me.

Bresnan probably 'rested'. Waite deserves to be ahead of him on current form.

I don't think Bresnan will have been dropped more squad rotation to use a modern phrase.

Still not too sure whether I'm going to this game what with it been a day/night fixture. It's going to mean not getting back home till very late. Alternative fixture is Derbyshire v Warwickshire just 10 minutes from home. Decisions, decisions.

I'm going to the seconds at Harrogate. Haven't been to that ground since the 1970s -- and, shamefully, have never been to a Second XI game. Really looking forward to it.

Is Tim Bresnan injured? I can't see us dropping/resting him

At the Durham game I thought Bresnan was limping slightly, looked like a problem with his left ankle.
So with Willey & Plunkett back it makes sense to give him a couple of games off.
Plus Coad probably deserves to retain his spot, Waite too. We'll need both of them when we lose players to England & the Lions.

I'd go with

Lyth
Bairstow
Root
Handscomb
Ballance
Rashid
Willey
Fisher
Rafiq
Plunkett
Waite

Weather looks good.

They have some serious big hitters but our bowlers should be too much for them, I hope.

Gale has said that both Bresnan & Fisher are being rested in his game.

It has to be right to rest Tim. He's played multiple roles in every game so far (including senior bowling advisor).

Northants seem to like the day/nighters.

Wonder if this is for cricket reasons, or night out spend on alcohol food reasons.

Always sounds a bit rowdy when listening or watching so suspect the latter.

One ground I have never convinced myself to travel to.

Northants is a good place to watch cricket, provided you can actually find the ground. I've been quite a few times & still have to stop & ask, even though we know we are close by.

I suspect they play day/nighters to try & increase the crowd. It might sound rowdy, but whenever I've been the crowds have been pretty poor. Although it is a number of years since I made it.

Do we need five bowlers plus Root? Rashid at six seems high, and whilst our lower order is strong in this game, you have too assume that the top six do most of the leg work. Leaning for Rafiq with Root doing the second spinner role (given his form in the Ireland game) might not be a bad option for this game

Wantage Road is a very pleasant ground indeed.
My last two visits were to 20/20 matches and on both occasions there were over 6,000 squeezed into the ground. This is pretty much capacity.
The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, though, as at Headingley, there were a few rowdy lads out for a night on the beer rather than concentrating on the cricket.
Usually, the ground is quite sedate.
Northants is a club that has struggled in the past but in recent years their combative and exciting 20/20 side has attracted growing numbers of supporters. Last year 5,000 was a regular attendance and 6,000 was reached a couple of times.
I'd agree about the difficulty in finding the ground. A few signs would help. I rely on the Sat Nav, which does the job perfectly well. Street parking is usually no problem and for bigger matches there is free parking in the nearby park.
You might suspect that I have a soft spot for Northants. You'd be correct.
