Carver must play

June 6 2017, 10:01 PM

For me: Lyth, Lees, Handscomb, Ballance(c), Leaning, Waite, Hodd(wk), Rafiq, Brooks, Carver, Sidebottom. If there is a doubt on Ben's fitness then leave him out. This team is balanced and the spinners should get a lot of bowling.

Agree with above team, both teams are likely to want to bat first unless it's very overcast in that case Carver would have to miss out for the extra seamer

If Coad isn't fit he must be replaced either by Patterson or by Fisher. You can't possibly go into a potentially wet-weather game with only two seam bowlers...at least, I hope we can't! Especially if Bad Brooks is still lurking in the wings, as one of the two.

I like Waite as a player, but not as 3rd seamer, please. And is his batting really that much better than the experienced Patto's? I know potentially he is, but *actually, at this moment*? Again, bear in mind the runs scored by Patto at Taunton last two seasons. [32 last season, 42 and 44* in 2015, all scored in crisis situations.]

I also know that if we go down the road of 3 seamers, 2 spinners, the batting will inevitably look thin in the absence of Bresnan and Rashid. But there is a lot of class, and indeed form, in the batting we have; and the bowlers can all bat, Carver included.

It's a tough call for team management. The 'opt out' solution would be to play just the one specialist spinner; that might also be the sensible way. I'm anticipating my trip to Taunton more keenly than I did before the bunsens were introduced.

I'm not quite as sanguine as Dave Morton about our batting form. Certainly four of the top six (if Bresnan is included in the top six) have now scored centuries and Handscombe and Ballance are clearly in form. But Lyth has only just ground out his first of the year, and Leaning may have done so in the last game but I'm not sure we can honestly say that he is in form. I actually think Hodd is fine at 6 - he is looking very good with the bat this season and he seems to respond to extra responsibility. But Rafiq at 7?

Waite may be less likely to get the battling 30 that Patto is capable of, but he does have the potential to score centuries, and surely this is what we need in the top six/seven?

For me, I would think about who is the more likely to take wickets Carver or Rafiq and choose one of them. I would then as Lyth to be the back up spinner - he is more than capable and does turn the ball. This enables us to play four seamers (Patto if Coad is unavailable). Whatever we do is a gamble, so I wont be critical of who is picked.

Bresnan is a huge loss for us in this game. I’m afraid it’s typical of the ECB to delay publishing the fixture list long enough for such an important player to impregnate his wife at the most inconvenient time. Is there no end to their villainy?

Lyth
Lees
Handscomb
Ballance c
Leaning
Hodd wk
Waite
Rafiq
Brooks
Coad
Sidebottom

Waite in as a direct replacement for Bresnan. He's not been overawed by anything in the one day games he's played.

The best spinner from Rafiq or Carver. Lyth is a decent, wicket-taking second spinner.

Two out of Coad, Brooks or Patterson. If Coad fails his fitness test then this decision is made easily.

Yes, I would go with that line up. Rafiq at 8 and Brooks at 9 provides us with a bit more batting oomph, and Waite is fourth seamer

Yes, I think WRM's is the better team, though it's the safe, conservative option (for the day after the General Election). I don't agree with EYT on this one.

Definitely Patto if Coad not fit; possibly Patto for Brooks anyway, on the horses for courses principle. But they must be at least thinking of the Carver option, if they've taken him down there. Is Carver for Rafiq even a possibility? Karl did bowl well under pressure in the RLC, but Azeem has looked in good nick, though his FC bowling figures don't quite stack up. And where does Fisher fit in?

We will just have to wait and see. Our management has a good record in these matters.

"You can't possibly go into a potentially wet-weather game with only two seam bowlers"

Forecast looking good for a full game, think it's a cert we'll play two spinners and hope to bat first.

Waite for Bresnan
Carver for Coad (the niggle makes seamer decision easier)

It`s a tricky decision, but I am sure they will get it right. Waite will replace Bresnan.

3 seamers, 2 spinners, and if so do we leave out Brooks or Coad/Patto?

4 seamers, 1 spinner, and if so which one of the two spinners is left out?

Either way we look weak batting wise with Waite at 6 and Hodd at 7.

Unfortunately the absentees in the first team means also a weakened second team for tomorrows match at Headingley.

A different day for the match v Middlesex and Willey, Plunkett, Rafiq, Carver, Waite, Fisher & Patterson could have been in the second team.

I quite like the look of East Yorkshire Tykes starting xi.

Assuming the Taunton wicket is conducive to spin and Coad is 100% fit, I would be tempted to replace Carver with Sidebottom just so the seam attack of Brooks, Coad and Waite has a variety of pace. The Overton twins have taken wickets at Taunton and they are no slouches with the ball.

This made me laugh.

We could pick 4 seamers and put them in, as is our right being the "away" team. This takes the need for 2 spinners out of the equation as we will not be batting last, so not so crucial. It could be damp and overcast on the first morning as well.

Lots of speculation about the balance of the team.

Won't be long before the professionals make the decision.

A Yorkshire win in 3 days would be just what the doctor ordered, give us some real impetuous, and give the lads a breather before the 50 over game.

It would be helpful to Somerset too as they have to get the ground ready for their quarter final on Tuesday.

So the best thing for everybody is that they cooperate and roll over.

Somerset and Yorkshire both forfeit their 1st innings and just crack on, ideally get this game finished by stumps on Day 1. The Royal London One Day Cup is of higher priority.
