Yorks v Somerset - pre match thread

From todays YP

".....Yorkshire, fresh off a Roses Championship win inside three days at Headingley at the weekend, travel to Taunton on Friday to tackle struggling Somerset looking for a third win in six matches this season.

Coach Andrew Gale will almost certainly name a second spinner in his squad, Karl Carver, who will miss Thursday’s second-team one-day Trophy final against Middlesex at Headingley as a result.

“It will be a different challenge to what we’ve had before,” accepted Gale. “You would expect a spinner’s track given what’s happened down there recently.”

Two questions

Who do we leave out from the first team to play Carver?

Which spinner plays for the second X1 on Thursday?

Possibly Brooks to answer the first question.

No idea for the second question.

Disappointed with Breast. He should get his priorities right. Nothing is more important than cricket. Laughing.

It will be a very long tail with Hodd at 6 then 5 bowlers (Brooks, Rafiq, Carver, Siddy, Coad or Patto).

Does Waite get a look in at 7, instead of Coad/Patto/Fisher? Is his bowling good enough?

We seem to forget Brooks scored a ton only last game but one.....

In current form we may not miss Bresnan as much as before. Fourth seamer at Taunton must be a thankless role anyway.

Waite gives depth to the batting so I'd pick him and have him as fourth seamer. Siddy Good Brooks and Coad plus Rafiq for me

Waite at 7 is possible. It strengthens the batting, but weakens the bowling.

Another problem is the match v Surrey. We already have 5 of our best white-ball players missing, are we also going to be without Tim & Coad as well??

A team of Lyth, Lees, Hanscombe, Ballance, Leaning, Waite, Rhodes, Rafiq, Carver, Patterson, & Fisher, will not give Surrey to many problems.

I'm sure Waite will come in for Bres.

Carver for Brooks,a 'Taunton only' pick. If Coad is unfit, Patto returns.

Bres is a massive loss, a real body blow.

Coad is learning quickly if he's picked up a niggle on the eve of a trip to Taunton.

Last season Patto had 27.2 - 8 - 80 - 2, with no luck whatsoever, Brooks 25 - 2 - 106 - 0, and Plunkett 19 - 1 - 87 - 0, in a score of 562 for 7.

Two years ago Patto had 23 - 10 - 70 - 5 in a score of 485.

Horses for courses? Absolute no-brainer if Coad unfit.

Surely Waite comes in at six? Fingers crossed for Coad.

Agree Waite at 6, or the "tail" is to long. Looks like we are playing two spinners, so with Hodd at 7 that only leaves room for two seamers, so if Coad is injured it solves the problem of who to leave out. If Coad is fit, then is it Brooks or Siddy we leave out??

My first thought was to think about playing Carver instead of Bresnan if the pitch is likely to turn.

The possible injury to Coad makes it more difficult. How quickly it seems we have come to rely on him.

I think I'd risk the batting looking a bit thin and try to cover all the options in the bowling department.

Lyth
Lees
Handscomb
Ballance
Leaning
Hodd
Rafiq
Carver
Brooks
Sidebottom
Coad/Patterson

Stick them in and hopefully get them on the back foot from the get go.

If we put them in, we will be batting last. If the wicket is taking spin it will be better for our two spinners on the last day, so surely we need to win the toss and bat first, or we may as well just play one spinner and four seamers.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it seems the coaching staff might be getting their convenient excuse in early for not playing Coad on a track he probably won't enjoy!

If you know of a way to guarantee winning the toss Stu I would agree with you.

Hants won the toss and batted first at the last CC match at Taunton.

Bess and Leach got 9 wickets between them on what turned out to be the lowest score of the match. I have to concede that Hants won the game anyway.

My feeling is if it turns we need two spinners. If it reverts to the Taunton road then our top 5 should be plenty good enough and we have the seamers to exploit any early dampness in the pitch.

Every team has used two frontline spinners in the CC this year at Taunton, Somerset picked three for one match.

Its a hard one to call at stretches the deprh of our batting when our bowling all rounders seem to be elsewhere.

Based on the last performance and gut feeling that Waite is similar to Bresnan, his would be my 11.

Maybe flakey on the spin but I trust our seamers any any track.

If it's a bunsen, is Lyth good enough to be the second spinner? Carver obviously provides left arm variety.
