Quite complicated, but no Root or Rashid. Can they play next week v Middlesex as well as the Surrey match?

Overton 7 lifetime T20 wickets at 59. Economy 10+.

Lucky lad!

"Moeen Ali, Jake Ball, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Ben Stokes have been rested and will instead play for their respective counties in the inaugural day-night round of the County Championship, which starts on 26 June.

This will allow them to gain experience of playing with the pink Dukes balls that will be used for the first day-night Test to be played in England, against West Indies at Edgbaston in August."

Seems to at least hint that Rashid is in the running for a Test berth

From the Grauniad:

... The new England Test captain Joe Root and others will instead take part in a day-night round of County Championship matches which immediately follows the South Africa series at the end of this month.

Moeen Ali, Jake Ball and Ben Stokes will also play for their counties rather than England, as preparation for the first day-night Test in this country against West Indies at Edgbaston in August. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, yet to play a home Test but vastly improved with the white ball of late, will do likewise ...

Durham fast bowler Wood is only available for the first Twenty20 before returning to his county to prepare for the Test, while Jonny Bairstow will move on to Yorkshire before the third and final match.

Still does not answer the question of whether Root and Rashid will be available next week v Middlesex. Don`t want to start any rumours, but it is Middlesex we are playing!!

I'd imagine Rashid will be available, it does suggest Root is rested ahead of the Tests, with the Surrey game the exception. My interpretation is that Root would be unavailable.

No chance Rashid will be available if England get to the final of the Champions Trophy, there's a clash. If we get knocked out in the semis then I guess we'll find out Thursday.

Surely if England don't make the ICC final it would be better if Jonny played in the Middx match than T20 series. He is going to be very light on match practice going into the tests

It seems very unlikely that Rashid or Root can play next week by the looks of it. And at best, since May 14th, Bairstow at best will have played 1 ODI, 1 4-day game and perhaps 2 T20s in nearly 2 months before the 1st Test

No Lions squads announced yet for next weeks matches. Hopefully it will not affect us, but it could be interesting who gets selected.

The first match (4 days) starts on the 3rd day of the next round of matches when 12 teams are playing and there are 3 T20 matches v SA (so I assume they will pick the team from the 6 counties who are not playing, or players not in the T20 squad).

The second match (3 days) starts on the final day of the following round of matches, when all 18 teams are playing and also clashes with the RL 1 day Cup Final. No more than one from each county would be the fairest and none from the two cup finalists.

Health warning for Stu:

I've read somewhere that Ballance will captain the Lions in the first class match with S Africa A and therefore miss the championship game with Surrey. Effectively a stepping stone to a test recall.

Understand this is related to the likelihood of missing this game due to his colour blindness which affects his performance in pink ball games.

Lots of presumptions but IF that were to happen and IF we reached the RL final, he would also miss that.
