Probably a good thing Bresnan's gone, he never got going at all. Need a rare Hodd T20 special now.

This is a big ask. To win from here will take some lusty hitting.

That's the game, sadly. A missed opportunity, that was eminently winnable.

One day, possibly in my lifetime, we might win a one day knockout match at Headingley sad.gif

Matthew Waite is putting up a good fight here. If Rafiq and Fisher can slog a few boundaries...

Yorkshire blow it again. Apart from a fluke game in 2002 we've been losing knock out games for 30 years.

Surrey have been better side in both departments. This is not surprising considering the talent that's missing and the current form of some of our batsmen.

Too slow at start of our innings, especially Leaning who is capable of scoring quickly, and sloppy bowling in last few overs let them get beyond 300. The key innings was Sangakkara who we had to remove cheaply - strange bowling choices in early stages. We should have got into semifinal directly instead of Worcester, but we were handicapped by being unable to play our international quintet. However, there is always 20/20 and of course the main event!

Mistimed this chase horribly. Falling 20 short having never been in it. Would rather die trying.

It should have been Hanscomb at 3, Ballance at 4, & Leaning at 5.

This, plus just 1 of our missing 5 in the team, would have changed the result. Team England & the ECB scupper our chances of winning a trophy again. Why oh why, do they have the Champions Trophy in the same week as the cup quarters and semis?

Great effort by all and praise to everyone of them and I am not going to criticise anyone of them for lack of effort and application,
but with just one of the England lads playing today, and a narrow defeat would have been a win.

Once again, a quarter or semi loss for us.

A disappointing but not unexpected result, with our missing personnel. Just to much of a handicap.

As was said at the time, finishing second was the worst possible outcome in the end. Third would have been perfect. A quarter final at Taunton so no mad dash anywhere at the conclusion of yesterday's match, and no chance for the home knockout curse to strike.

Have to agree with criticism of the approach to the chase, we never got above the rate and never looked like doing so.

One down. Can we win either of the other two? (Will the ECB allow us?)

Doubt it twelthman, when we play every match with 1/2 of our team missing.

I do recall us beating Surrey in a big one day knock out match.

1987 when we beat them in the B&H semi final before we then beat Northants at Lords.

Rain affected match that went into a second day before most of you were born. Think Bairstow and Sidebottom both played unlike today sadly.

Never mind. Given the choice of winning only one of this weeks games I'd have picked yesterdays by a million miles.

Good experience for Waite Fisher Carver Coad against a fairly experienced opponent who are happy to pick their senior pros whereas we don't.

The ECB did not cost us the game; we restricted Surrey to a manageable total and then had two partnerships which could and should have won us the game. A strangely lacklustre approach by talented and experienced batsmen cost us the game. Handscomb left himself too much to do but Waite gave it a real go - that lad has got something about him.

As well as in 1987 Yorks also beat Surrey to get to the C&G Final at Lords in 2002 .... the wierdest one day match ever. It should have been played in Leeds on Wednesday 31st July. Due to rain Wednesday, Thurday & Friday were washed out.

On the Saturday Yorks beat Notts in at reduced 45 over 'Norwich Union League 1' 45 over match at Headingly via D/L. Surrey 2nds lost an NU League 2 match to Northants at Whitgift School on the same day.

The reason was that the umpires somehow manged to re-arrange the C&G match for Sunday 4th August. The Surrey 1st team stayed in Leeds On a newly prepared pitch Yorks restricted Surrey to 173-8 & due to a White century & 67 from Wood won by 10 wickets on D/L ..... Surrey weren't happy

Thanks to a wonder catch from Vaughan & a brilliant tom from Elliot (well supported by McGrath) Yorks beat Zumerset in the Final/

Even though I was working in Leeds at the time I didn't vave tickets for the semi, but did attend the match when it was eventually played.

ps I was at the 1st day in 1987 but didn't see the semi final win

Today was sadly 'the usual'. I didn't see the Surry innings but, as usual they 'went big' in their last 10 overs. Our innings looked lackluster.

It's always difficult to make judgements when sitting in an armchair. A very young Yorkshire side played pluckily against the far more experienced Surrey.

Sangakarra was well ahead of anyone else with the bat and Surrey's seamers were far more resourceful and thoughtful than ours.

I was taken aback by Coad's lack of pace. From the boundary, to me, he looked closer to 85mph. He seldom touched 80 in this game. Unless he adds a little more pace, once county batsmen have got used to him, he'll struggle to take wickets on flatter tracks.

If one looks for the key moment - for me it was when Ballance slapped a full toss to wide mid on. From that point, a tough chase became too big an ask.

Again, from the armchair, Surrey looked a charmless bunch. No surprise there then.

Not sure if Surrey were a charmless bunch, but Dernbach certainly falls into that category, very unlikeable, the polar opposite to Sangakarra, who seems a class guy off the field as well as on it.

Certainly an ultra competitive bunch, helped by playing against our partial 2nd team

Maybe we'd be better to forfeit home advantage in knockout cricket.

Come on Worcester!
