Both Gubbins and Helm picked for the Lions next week so will miss the game against us, no Yorkshire players selected though.

Really strong Lions team, and best of all no Yorkshire players! Good to see Stoneman getting a chance. However it's good to see the boot on the other foot for a change. Middlesex lose Gubbins and Helm, Surrey lose Stoneman, Foakes and Sam Curran, Lancashire - Hameed, Somerset lose Leach, Bess and Overton and Essex lose Lawrence and Porter.

That is a lot of weakened teams, as well as the England T20 squad as well. Do the other teams have the strength in depth to cover these losses that we do?

Surrey and Somerset don't have games next week.

Fair enough, I'd assumed, naively, that an even number of teams in the division would mean all teams play.

Suspect Coad would have been in the squad had it not been for his sore shins.

From cricinfo:

A separate Lions squad will be named next week for a three-day match against the senior South Africa tourists in Worcester starting on June 29.

James Whitaker, the national selector, said: "We have had to delay naming that squad because the game clashes with the Royal London One-Day Cup final, and we will not consider players from the counties who qualify for Lord's.

"There were other considerations in selecting this squad - as ever, we were mindful of counties who have important fixtures in the Specsavers County Championship, while four members of the Lions squad who won the Royal London One-Day Series against South Africa A were unavailable after being selected for the full England squad for the NatWest T20 internationals against South Africa."

Great news that no Yorkshire players are in the squads so far, but still the 3 day match to come.

Also good that James Whittaker is considering the needs of the counties in making his selections, but puts into question why arrange them in the first instance to clash with the Champions Trophy (last weeks games) and the 1 day Final of the 1 day comp, when they have all season to slot the games in.

I like that squad. Bess and Overton especially.

I like a friendly chat with the home supporters but if there's any grumbling about Middlesex missing players next week I may get a little tetchy.
