Re: BREAKING NEWS l Gary Ballance called up to the England Lions

June 24 2017, 12:31 PM

"Yes only one team from these islands should be allowed to have the name Lions. And they are playing today"

Though they were, of course, originally a spin-off from the first England cricket tour to Australia, which is why the first "Lions" in 1888 were managed by the England cricket legends Arthur Shrewsbury, Alfred Shaw and James Lillywhite. Andrew Stoddart, the Blackheath centre three-quarter and Middlesex batsman, was one of the cricketers who stayed on to play in the rugby (and Aussie rules) games. Stoddart took over the captaincy when Robert Seddon, the Swinton forward who was one of the specialist rugby players to join the tour, died in an accident on the Hunter river. There was a big Yorkshire connection, with Angus Stuart of Dewsbury and Tommy Haslam of Batley among the more prominent players. There was also representation from Bramley and Halifax, while the many Lancastrians also largely came from clubs that would soon turn professional: Rochdale Hornets, Runcorn, Salford and Swinton.

Plunkett called up to the Lions squad as well to replace J Overton who is injured. I'm starting to get a little concerned that he might end up in the Test squad with all the injuries piling up.

Nice bit of history there, Dewsburian.

Swinton RLFC used to be 'Lions' and perhaps still are; there's a Leicester Lions RU club too.

It's interesting that some animals are considered suitable names for sports teams; Lions, Wolves, Sharks, Tigers, Rams, Foxes, Wasps, Hornets, Rhinos, Eagles, Ospreys, etc.

How about Hampshire Oysters v Kent Hyenas?

Plunkett was available for Yorkshire this week but they chose to leave him out.

Phil --- Are you trying to wind us up!!. Plunkett has already played for England so how can it be a "promotion", as you state, to play for England Lions.

Fair enough then. Liam has already played 13 times for England, if anyone is interested!!

No No No
It's not tongue in cheek.
I am genuinely delighted when any Yorkshire player moves a step closer to International Cricket.
Liam will be playing against South Africa.
I see that as a step up from County Cricket.
A promotion.
I will admit to being fed up with all the - "England are taking all our players" whining. So, while not tongue in cheek, my post was a blunt reminder that we should celebrate YCCC players being selected for The Lions and/or England.

I posted a longer piece earlier in this thread about the Promotions for Gary Ballance, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Harry Brook & Joe Root. I'll add my congratulations to a well deserved call up for Plunkett.

Phil

It is not a "call-up" Phil, as he has already played for England 13 times. It is an actual demotion, and certainly not a "promotion".

OK Stu. But, I'm not sure where you're going with that. Are you saying Liam should refuse to play as it's a demotion? Are you saying Leaning & Rhodes should refuse to play for the 2s as it's a demotion? I'll withdraw the word Promotion - if that is what is offending.

How do people feel about - Congratulations to Liam Plunkett on being CHOSEN for the England Lions to play against South Africa.

Or is it that people object to me congratulating him. Surely not. Bit churlish.....

It's a four day game against the full South African team, so of course it's a promotion from county cricket. It's certainly a promotion from not being selected by Yorkshire this week. It may also be a test trial for Plunkett given the injury doubts to one or two seam bowling all-rounders.

Chosen
Selected
Picked
Brought into
Asked to play for
Drafted into
Named in

any good?

Look, I'll back off. This is a wonderful friendly forum. And, I'm pleased to be able to contribute. I have no problem with the ECB picking any Yorkshire player, for any of their age group or development or Test teams, or deciding they need to be rested, at any time, clash of schedule or not. I salute those players on their way. I do not think there is a conspiracy against YCCC by Andrew Strauss (or anyone else). It's not a view you'll hear often. But, I'll stand my ground on congratulating YCCC players who are recognised by being picked for ECB teams. There, it's been said.

Don't back off, Phil. The forum needs your common sense approach to ECB conspiracy theories! (In my humble opinion, anyway).

Phil --- let's settle for "Congratulations to Liam for being selected in the squad".

I have no problems with that and I also do congratulate him.

Agree it's not a step up for Plunkett but it's a chance he has to take with both hands.

As he isn't required for Yorkshire he's a handy pick for the ECB to step in at short notice without rocking any more boats.

Realistically his test playing days are over but we've said that before. With Anderson and Broad possibly carrying injuries he might end up being considered a safe pair of hands.

It's a weird Lions squad anyway, strong batting with an eye to the upcoming test series and a bowling line-up looking well into the future.

They've even added a joke wicket keeper as a cherry on top.

Someone seems frisky, must have been on the high abv.

With injuries taken into account I'd imagine Plunkett stands a chance of playing in this summers tests, which is a strange situation for someone who can't get into the Yorkshire bowling line up and isn't even now first reserve!

I thought that Plunkett was the pick of the bowlers yesterday given that he was bowling at the business end. I am slightly surprised that he wasn't considered for this game for Brooks, who hasn't looked at his best this season. Note that his fastest delivery yesterday was 92 MPH - he would have given us something a bit different.

Agree Brooks looked lacklustre at Lord's. Am not sure why the management wouldn't pick Plunkett if available.

Ballance's call-up is good for him though a nuisance for us, but I wish him well: what I do not wish well is the ECB with their 'drop-in/drop out' contemptuous attitude to the Championship, as if players - even non-contracted ones - are their toys who can be taken away and put back on a whim. They should not have scheduled this game to coincide with a round of Championship matches but, having done so, they should have picked their players and required Counties to substitute them for all four days, not whisk them away half way through. This contempt can only devalue the County game, which cannot possibly be what the ECB wants, oh wait.......
