Really disheartening to hear Plunkett now gone off injured.
Combination of bad batting, bowling at times and bad luck costing us this game.

According to Cally, Plunkett is "sore in the groin area" and is being assessed.

Who would have thought, in March, that with our 'strength in depth' seamers of Sidebottom, Brooks, Patterson, Plunkett, Willey, Bresnan, we would by July be depending on Ben Coad and Harry Brook as strike bowlers?

And that our new captain would be playing for England again.

Much easier to bat now, ball older. Current pair accelerating. Rash not come off, so down to Bres, Coad and Brook. Someone is going to have to bat very well. If Somerset don't win this time they might as well give up.

5 of the bowlers that you have mentioned are in their 30s. One due to retire this season. The old guard will have to be changed soon. Hopefully Ryan will stay at the club in a coaching capacity and help with this transition.

And how long do we think they will want to bat? Do they bat us out of the game but in so doing reduce the overs they can bowl, or assume that we will be brittle and get a bowling spell in this evening?

On the one hand, Somerset have come into the game with youngsters and old lags who were out of form (Tresco and Hildreth) - a bit like us, so they may think that we will do better second time round as they have done. On the other hand, we are two bowlers down, so they may feel that things have been easier for them than they might otherwise have been.

Time will tell

Hello darkness my old friend

We deserve a bit of luck with the weather. Losing 2 bowlers in one game!

Back on, but very gloomy. Be disappointed if we are made to bat tonight.

Ah, going off again.

Play abandoned for day , would imagine they will bat 75 mins or so in morning getting around 370 lead then its over to our batting specialists or the intervention of the forecast of rain around 4/5 in the afternoon

It is that classic question - what does the opposition least want? The pressure of batting all day - with a small chance of victory, or batting for two sessions for a draw (assuming bad light intervenes).

Somerset is short of confidence, we are short of confidence. Will Somerset be more defensive than they might otherwise be - but they do need the points - drawn games aren't going to cut the mustard for them. Bat for six overs and then declare would be my instinct.

Re: County Championship | Yorkshire vs Somerset at Scarborough (Day Three)

July 5 2017, 7:15 PM

What a miserable day. It felt more like October than July with lessened skies. We did well to get past 200, but at the end Rashid & Sidebotton were playing the keep the batsman on strike game, of course this ended poorly with Rash trying to hit over the top & failing.

Some of us were surprised when Coad was followed by Bresnan rather than Plunkett. The Sumerset openers prospered until Coad got Trescothick. Daley in his 6th over Liam pulled up. He bowled the last ball then went off. This left us with 2 pace bowlers plus Harry Brook who gave his best but isn't exactly threatening. In addition Rashid had one of his 'off days', blowing far too many poor balls. Lyth was tried, in my opinion too late. Yes Adam didn't threaten but he did keep it tight.

Whilst if wasn't that light all day it did get worse. Eventually the umpires took them off. After 25 minutes the light was considered to have improved (I couldn't tell the difference). Yorkshire then missed a trick by pitching it up. Eventually Bresnan's bowled short one which the batsman couldn't see & they went off again.

Sum are 297 ahead. IMO that's enough for Somerset to win, but I'd expect them to 'give it the long handle' for a while in the morning giving us 360 off 80 to win. Unless our batsman improve massively only the weather can save us.

Frankly we don't deserve the weather to save us in this game so it's up to the top order to do the job to save face and boost confidence for the next game. Bat, bat and bat. Play for time, form and the draw. Don't flash at the wide one. Keep the shots on the ground. Only play the ball you need to. Tire the bowlers out. And bat some more.

Our season gets worse game by game with call ups, injuries, loss of form, dropped catches, I sense Dizzy would have done something to spark a reaction and an improvement but Gale hasn't the experience. He needs to do something as doing more of the same leads to the same output. Somerset boldly dropped their skipper who was out of form. We lost ours too. I think it's clear who was the bigger loss.
