Re: 1st Test | England vs South Africa at Lord's (Match Thread)

I hope Dawson gets a 5fer in the 2nd dig or take there may be a clamour for rashid again if England need 2 spinners anywhere else.

Personally I think we are a batter light as many have said to bat at 3 moving GB to 5, JB to 7 and Moeen at 8

I think even if they'd collapsed before lunch, they'd probably have enough. I bet at Lords the number of 250+ successful chases are comfortably in double figures. Its a tough ground to score on in the 4th innings.

Good day for Jonny, bat and gloves. Dropped on 7, that bit of luck you need every now and again.

Looks like another crappy wicket at Lords, very similar to when we played them a couple of weeks ago.

Win the toss, bat first on a "road", then the wicket becomes almost impossible to bat on later on the game.

Anywhere else but Lords and there would be serious questions asked and test matches taken away from them. No chance of that at the so called "home of cricket" as that would upset the heirachy of the MCC and the ECB.

Yes let's have more wickets where the ball does nothing for 5 days.

I do see your point, but wickets like this give to much of an advantage to winning the toss and batting first. We expect a small amount of detioriation as the game goes on, but the match two weeks ago and this one has been grossly unfair to the team losing the toss.

Surely a pitch that gets harder to bat on over five days is precisely what test cricket needs??!! That's a cheap dig at the ECB even by the standards on here.

Disagree, Stuart, it's been more up and down latterly and there's been sharp spin from the odd ball, but it's made for an excellent match. You could argue, though, that it puts too much emphasis on the toss. I think it's refreshing to see some spin encouragement for once. The low ones have been harmless because they've all been wide, so far.
Lord's wickets in the past few years have been far too flat in my view, for both county games and Tests.

The sun has played a big part in the deteriotation of both pitches to be fair.
South Africa also scored 350+ first innings so not as though they've prepared a mess.

I think it's been an excellent pitch.

Apologies Seadog, but it was not a cheap dig at the ECB.

I also agree that the wickets in the past at Lords have been to bland and flat, but now they have gone to far the other way. Surely there is somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.

Would Root have bowled had it been overcast and humid on Thursday morning? We'll never know but maybe the wicket isn't as important as the conditions at the toss.

Mentioned on TMS that SA would prob have got us out for 250 if not dropped Root twice before 20. SA not hugely disadvantaged by losing the toss - just made key mistakes.

Regardless of the pitch, Moeen's control a massive improvement on the winter and last summer. Had some game.

I appreciate that no one agrees with me, but it was a crap pitch, very similar to the one we played on.

Today 233 runs for 19 wickets.

It did not last the 5 days, and was not fit for batting on today. 19 wickets in 72overs!!!

It was a win the toss, bat first, win the match pitch.

Middlesex also scored just under 450 against us in the first innings, then found batting almost impossible, like us, on the second and third day (on day 2 & 3 - 26 wickets, 161 0vers, 491 runs).

This wicket did last a day longer but still poor.
