Tyke 1950 back in the thread makes the point about Derbyshire being much improved. I saw there 2nds the other week play a t20 double header with Notts 2nds. A much more experienced Notts side won both games. The Derby members were feeling very positive with John Wright once of Derbyshire and fresh from the IPL getting the credit. They were fulsome in their praise. The game was at Worksop college, John Wright and Dominic Cork were both present and working closely with the team.

As an aside full marks for Dominic Cork. This game was the day after Derby had lost at Old Trafford. Cork doing a lap of the ground, was collared by the Derby people sat next to me. One proceeded with hindsight to explain how Derby should have played the game. Cork stood, listened, unable to get a word in edgeways for several minutes, smiled, nodded a lot and generally came across very well. The pay off line once he'd moved on, from the Derby man to his friends was 'he didn't disagree with anything I said'.

Those Derby fans will have been pleased by their team's performance in the return fixture against Lancashire.
It was a splendid victory featuring a mature, responsible innings from Luis Reece (ex Lancashire) and some good seam bowling after a fearsome early assault from Liningstone and Brown.
I wish them well.

Possible blank evening!

Match called off already at Old Trafford along with delayed starts at Bristol and Cardiff doesn't bode well.

Tonight it's the New ZeAland Bears v the Saffer Steelbacks in a game affecting the top of our group with the winner overtaking us at the top in all probability.

They are interviewing Adam Hose who played against us for Somerset but has gone to Edgbaston mid season. Not much loyalty shown to Somerset just as he broke into their team. Not sure of circumstances and whether it is similar to Kohler Cadmore or different?

Allott and Key now commenting on mid season transfers and how it didn't happen in their day!

Yes big game for both of these as being top actually means something for them.

Crunch time

August 1 2017, 8:17 PM

Still 7 or even 8 teams in with a shot at qualifying so things are getting serious.

If we can get a couple of wins in this week that will most likely be enough for our needs.

Looking forward to some 4 day cricket but the closer it gets the sillier the scheduling looks leaving T20 qualification hanging in the air.

Northants made a complete mess of that chase. Warwickshire go top. Good for them.

Yes some pretty poor stuff last night including a scratchy Bell innings with his total helped by Chinese cuts for four, some shockingly poor bowling from big Boyd Rankin and then a strange decision by Northants to send in a slight young lad who could barely hit it off the square instead of the burly Kleinveldt which probably cost them the game.

Duckett also showed his weakness against spin extends to in England and not just the sub continent although the noisy Patel's delivery was the mirror image of the perfect ball Rashid bowled v Durham last week.

We should have a lot clearer picture about who will qualify from our group by the end of the week, with 6th vs 7th tonight followed by 4th vs 5th and 2nd vs 3rd tomorrow- I would suggest that the losers of the former two matches will face an uphill struggle whilst the winner of our match will be almost there. Let's hope the weather plays ball and all matches are able to be played to a conclusion.

Somerset must be gutted to have lost Hose, but isn't he (at age 24) now on his 5th County club? Will he finish the season with Warwicks? Will he leave them when, almost inevitably, they get relegated?

Odd game, T20. Results are pretty random. Could decide all games on toss of a coin, save all that expensive running around, and provide more time for real cricket, though it has contributed more to the game's skills than 50 or 40-over versions.

'Could decide all games on toss of a coin'

This method already used to decide a high proportion of 'real'Cricket matches!

Re: Other t20 games

Well we've won our last 8 T20 games at Headingley in a row (odds of a coin coming out the same way 8 times in a row are 1 in 128) and there are huge discrepancies between counties' performances since T20 was introduced- Hants reached 6 Finals Days in a row, Somerset reached 4 Finals Days in a row, Notts and Essex each made it to the QF at least for 5 consecutive seasons, whilst Derbyshire and Worcestershire have never made it to Finals Day, Middlesex have only made it out of the group stages once in eight years etc etc- so although on an individual match level there may be more variance in T20 cricket (which, like any knockout tournament, will generally lead to more different champions) but over the long-term I think it is quite clear that the game is nothing like a toss of the coin, and there is just as much skill involved in T20 cricket as any other format.

As long as all teams start on a level playing field and not with -4 points....

Surely the idea that t20 is a lottery and could be decided by the toss of a coin is as outdated as the dinosaurs. Having said that, there may be one or two of those lurking on here 😉

Well Notts and Leics have started on time- oddly enough Leics don't seem to fancy having Hales chasing again so have opted to stick Notts in...
