Match report.

July 24 2017, 7:56 AM

Following from the match report on the YCCC website.

'WHAT’S NEXT

Yorkshire’s third successive home match in the Blast comes against local rivals Durham at Headingley on Wednesday evening (6.30pm).

It will be the Vikings’ sixth of 16 North Group fixtures in this competition.'

I hope they aren't using that information for planning purposes as it will actually be the seventh of 14.

Do not understand why Lees or Carver were playingyesterday. Surely in 20 over match we did not need Rashid, Rafiq, Lyth and Carver but thank goodness we included Patterson. The brilliant knock by Willey with Rashid and Patterson won the match for us.

Lees played because TKC was ineligible.

Carver i don't have an issue with playing him, but didn't agree with him being brought on to Whiteley hitting to a small boundary. He should have bowled from the same end as Rashid if required, spinning it away from that boundary.

I know winning the game is the main thing but you should still look to be as ruthless as possible, afterall nrr can play a part.

First class or not first class is a moot point. Still the 6th time it has happened, whether the other 5 were first class or not does not really matter. Probably few were, as I suspect the majority of them were in limited over games.

From Cricinfo

".....Sheffield-born Whiteley becomes the sixth man to achieve the feat in world cricket, including Lancashire's Jordan Clark, who did it in a second-team game against Yorkshire in 2013."

Back to the match. Patterson was outstanding -- 3 overs for 8 runs right at the end. A truly brilliant performance. That one over from Carver almost lost us the match, Patto pulled it back for us.

Fisher in for Carver next match please. Do we really need 3 spinners plus Lyth`s` occasional stuff?

Plunkett to come back sometime as well, so lets give Fisher a game before then.

Think gale said same strip was being used for the three home games so would consider three spinners for that reason

Yes if you follow the sky t20 games there is a trend developing to take pace off the ball as pitches are often being used third time round.

Middlesex v Surrey had a plethora of spinners including Malan bowling decent leggies but the Sky boys were going on about getting any spinner not playing along to the Oval. Derby v Worcester not dissimilar with Reece bowling filthy left arm spin.

Yesterday's problem wasn't playing Carver and Rash and Raffa but having a short boundary for a left handed.

Even the seamers like Southee are bowling more and more slower balls.

Yes indeed - it was Willey i think.
It was quite a muted appeal - the umpires conferred and told them to play on.
No-one seemed to complain too much.

Dont think anybody who saw it didn't think it was an unbelievable knock but it was when the game was virtually lost and the wicket was pitched very near the Western Terrace boundary ,lots of records will be broken if this is going to be classed as first class, maybe first class limited overs should now become a classification. This is from Wickipedia re first class cricket

First-class cricket is an official classification of the highest standard international or domestic matches in the sport of cricket. A first-class match is of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each although, in practice, a team might only play one innings or none at all.

The David Willey "hit wkt" appeal was after he had completed a run and was made when he was stood at the non-strikers end. Cox noticed the bails were off, so he appealed, but who knows how the bails came off. Could have been David Willey knocking them off in playing the shot, could have been wind, or could have been Cox himself accidently knocking the bails off.

After the umpires conferred, he was given not out. He was about 70 at the time, so could have been a match changer.

From todays YP

"TO the names of Garry Sobers, Ravi Shastri, Herschelle Gibbs and Yuvraj Singh can be added that of Ross Whiteley.

The 28-year-old Worcestershire batsman, born in Sheffield, yesterday became only the fifth man to hit six sixes in an over in senior cricket.

He inflicted the punishment on Karl Carver, the 21-year-old Yorkshire left-arm spinner, who thus joined fellow unfortunates Malcolm Nash, Tilak Raj, Daan van Bunge and Stuart Broad in the hall of infamy......"

Who would have thought Stuart Broad would be one of the infamous five.

Later on the article it refers to "first team cricket". So although not "first class" , maybe "first team cricket" or "senior cricket" applies to his feat.

Well judged choice of phrase by the YP. Good to see their standards of journalistic accuracy aren't slipping.

From BBC Sport

The 5 occasions!!

31 Aug 1968 - Gary Sobers. Bowler: Malcolm Nash. Nottinghamshire v Glamorgan (County Championship), St Helen's Ground, Swansea.

10 Jan 1985 - Ravi Shastri. Bowler: Tilak Raj. Bombay v Baroda (Ranji Trophy), Wankhede Stadium, Bombay. Shastri went on to reach the fastest double century in first-class cricket history in the same innings, off 123 balls, matched last summer by Glamorgan's Aneurin Donald.

16 March 2007 - Herschelle Gibbs. Bowler: Daan van Bunge. South Africa v Netherlands (World Cup), Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts.

19 Sept 2007 - Yuvraj Singh. Bowler: Stuart Broad. India v England (T20 World Cup), Kingsmead, Durban.

23 July 2017 - Ross Whiteley. Bowler: Karl Carver. Worcestershire v Yorkshire (T20 Blast), Headingley. Carver's over also included a fifth-ball wide, but Whiteley hit sixes off all the other six legal deliveries - the first time the feat has occurred in England.

Only 1 really first class, in the truest meaning of the phrase!!
