Well if England continue to play with 10 men by picking Dawson again they may come unstuck.

Last night showed loud and clear who should be playing as the front line spinner.

Flexible batting line-up

Looks like a bit of weather around so your line-up looks right and I can't see any role, or excuse, to play Dawson.

I don't mind Malan batting as low as 7, as long as we get off to a decent start, but I think 5 would be a more natural position for a player who is unlikely to bowl.

Malan, if he plays, should bat at five.

I've always liked the idea of Stokes at six, Bairstow at seven and Ali at eight.

Cool, full white-grey cloud cover and still here (a mile away from the Oval)

Surely you can not play Malan at 8. If he plays, he is a "specialist" batsman, and should be no lower than 5.

Cards are shuffled for England but they still don't look like they can compete - heading for a thrashing Down Under at this rate, I think. Hope I'm wrong but I can see 230-7 or 320-2 by the close, depending on toss. It's a perfect venue for SA and Amla in particular.

England win toss and bat so we'll see. 3 debutants.

Looks a better balanced team without Dawson and with extra specialist batsman, but opening partner for Cook is problem which must be sorted out before Ashes tour - Jennings is NOT the answer. Stoneman could be the best option for Aistralian conditions. Of course, Rashid must go to Australia but maybe will not be needed in English conditions where Ali with 4 seamers may be OK. Hope they d not push Bairstow lower than number 6 as he is a much more consistent batsman than either Stokes or Moeen Ali.

Well I wasn't impressed by Malan. He looked completely outclassed by the bowling. Maybe it was nerves with it being his debut. See how he goes in the 2nd innings, I hope he proves me wrong and plays well.

I find it bizarre one of our best 3 batsmen is coming in at number 7.

It's amazing, to me, how the pundits make such sweeping judgements ss soon.

Lloyd " Westley looked totally at home in test cricket" and another , can't remember who " Malan looked good" He'd face d 5 (five) balls.

Next week they'll be pulling Westley's technique apart.

Didn't he just fall away a little as he edged to slip or does that not apply to right handers? happy.gif

Bairstow at 7 strengthens the side - provided there are a string of quality test-class batsmen ahead of him. It looks like we don't have that, so an alternative would be Foakes at 7 and Bairstow higher. Also means we could have Woakes, Foakes and Stokes, which will make some of us very happy indeed.

"Woakes, Foakes and Stokes," sounds like a legal firm's shingle Charles Dickens would conjure up...or the textlexic editor of an online porn site. A clever observation, BTW - Alex

Good day of proper Test cricket despite the rain, and England deserve credit for grinding it out. Most of the wickets, if not all, were down to excellent bowling, in contrast to that last outing.

Isn't there a bit of a double standard in comments on batsmen? Malan got a very good ball, but he did play it in the style of Norman Wisdom. I hate to think what they'd have said if that had been Gary Ballance.

Well, it's about 6 weeks since he scored a brilliant 100 against the Aussies in the Champions Trophy so not that long to be honest.
