Facts & Quiz

6,938 cricketers have appeared in the county championship since W.G. Grace faced the first ball at Bristol in 1890.
Of these, 808 men - more than one in nine - played only once; 100 of them failed to score a run, take a wicket or hold a catch.

Six batsmen have averages of 100 or more in the CC. Three are modern overseas players. The other three go back to the 1920`s.

Doubt if anyone can name all 6 (unless thy have the same book as me), but maybe the 3 modern ones can be named?

I'd guess at Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara & Barry Richards?

1 correct EYT, but no clues as to which one.

I'm guessing Ponting, and in hindsight, I think the other two are likely to be overseas who had short spells over here. To average over 100 I can't see it been a player who spent years and years here...

Ponting is correct, and you are also correct with the other two being short stay players.

I will keep it running for a while longer.

In the meantime, a trick question.

Which cricketer never took a wicket for his county, but got a hat-trick for England.

Is there a minimum no of innings?

I doubt it's Inzaman, Yuvraj, Richardson, Blewett or Handscomb....

No minimum of innings - that was why they managed such a high average. Not a well known name. He played for Northants.

30 mins or so for the answer.

The 6 batsmen who have averages of 100 or more in the CC are

Damien Martyn (2 matches, out twice for 342 runs)
SA, Con de Lange (4 matches for Northants, out once for 156 runs)
Ricky Ponting (7 matches for Somerset & Surrey, out 7 times for 790 runs)

The other three go back to the 1920s

Cec Tyson (Yorkshire, 1921 - 2 matches, average 101.5)
Horace Bloomfield (Surrey, 1921 - 2 matches, average 169)
Joe O`Gorman (Surrey, 1927 & 1928 - 3 matches, average 106).

Guess the answer to the trick question is Geoff Hurst, one first class game for Essex.
