England Squad for Edgebaston

Stoneman for Jennings. Crane for Dawson. Woakes for Finn

End of the line for Rash in test cricket? Particularly since Crane has hardly been outstanding in four day cricket this season. Also an admission that Dawson was the wrong call.

From what I've seen of crane the Aussies will have a field day. Ballance one fit in for Malan to bat at 5

Sensible changes at last.

Woakes was an easy one mind you and you worry that Whitaker and his panel said to pick the left handed opener from Durham and got the wrong one first time around. Didn't the Aussies once pick a spinner Peter Taylor and everyone thought they had got the wrong bloke?

Crane is a better shout than Dawson. Longer term he may be the answer and some squad experience will help before he is needed. The team carries three players most games anyway so they may as well carry a young leggie instead of a useless top order batsman

Well it is likely to be the end of the line for Yorkshire as far as Rashid is concerned thanks to the county's poor use of his skills. They have not bowled him at the right times over several seasons, with obsession of rotating 4 seamers and have not used his batting potential. If we are relegated, I think he will then move to another Division 1 county and prosper with them and England.

It seems to me that Rashid is a 'confidence' player. Having had that confidence knocked by being overlooked will we get the best out of him for the remaining games he's available for?

Agree to some degree about Rashid . But this season he has 9 first class wickets @ 51 and an economy rate of 4.49 so it is hard to see how he warrants a test place .

Crane has 16 wickets @ 40 .

rashid

the reason he has been dropped for test cricket is no England captain has any confidence in him if he plays in Australia he will get nocked all over the place, and the same went at scarbourgh this week .

At the moment he not a viable selection for The Ashes so what's the point in picking him now? England rightly see him as a white ball specialist.

So he misses Yorkshire's last 3 matches because he is away playing white ball for England and thus does not get picked for the Ashes because he has no FC form this season.... vicious circle.

Seems to me little to choose between crane and rashid on stats alone. We may never know how good he could have been in home games or in Australia. He's only ever played against the best players of spin.

In county cricket he does not only play against the best players of spin but he has failed to take regular wickets for Yorkshire this season .

How do you take wickets if you are not given the ball until neatly 50 overs have been bowled like at Scarborough this week? Of course, most leg spinners in history have tended to be more expensive than off spin bowlers, but they also do offer more variety. There is no doubt Rashid has been used by Yorkshire and England "as last resort option" rather than being used against a new batsman. He invariably produces good figures in white ball cricket and one of the reasons for this is that he is given the ball as a positive move, not as an after thought when seamers havs been unable to break a long stand or remove an obdurate batsman.

In 2015 Rashid played 7 FC games and took 28 wickets @ 28. A decent return , worthy of a test place . This season in 6 games he has 9 @ 51 . His red ball form has declined markedly and i do not think the tactics of how he is used have changed.

I got some stick for continuing to support Rashid when he was at his lowest ebb around 2012. He's still just about my favourite player. However I think he doesn't get put on quickly against the top order because experience has shown that he doesn't tend to get them out. Of course, once a view like that is there, it quickly becomes self-justifying. He's now seen primarily as a cleaner-up of the tail. But would we really suggest that with Ryan, Coad or whichever seamer has taken wickets in full flow, we should take one off and let Rash bowl at the new batsman?

I always feel Rash does best when functioning as a genuine all-rounder. Given the mess with the batting, how about a couple of games at no.3?

Dobell has tweeted that England have given up on Rashid for Tests - story to follow. Will make interesting reading.

He has bowled a bit over 100 overs in first class cricket, which is less than ideal preparation for test matches- this is partly due to England call ups, and partly to do with the way he is used. Crane has bowled 180 overs, so is presumably a bit more grooved at this stage in proceedings.

In fact the story reports Joe Root as saying the door isn't closed for Rashid.

Nice words of encouragement for Rashid. Take loads of wickets in Championship cricket and , i assume , you could still be on the plane to Australia. So clearly England will give him the chance by leaving him out of the OD squad for the Windies games and letting him play in all of our last 4 Championship games and not just the Middlesex match ... and if Rashid is serious about a test career he should be asking for the chance to play red ball cricket .

The way this season is structured, with the counties playing white ball cricket during the Test matches and Championship matches during the ODIs/T20Is, makes it quite difficult for players who only play red or white ball cricket for England to break into the other format, as they have a limited opportunity to actually play it. I do agree that Rashid has been poor when he has played though...
