Wonder if the demand for attacking declarations will quieten if they knock these off..

I think that going for the total after tea may be their downfall. It's always the question of how many wickets down before you decide to play out the draw?

A surprising stat just quoted on Sky.

No one has ever scored a century in both innings in any first class match at Headingley (not just test matches). Braithwaite got close though.

128 years of cricket at Headingley and no one has managed it yet!!

Cant quite want Windies to win from here but would be disappointed if any neutral cricket fan was not cheering them on.
Hope they can use this test as a base to improve their Test ranking.

Joe seems to be lacking ideas/imagination. Surely should have bowled a few overs himself by now. Even had a look at Malan.

Not got the runs to pay with now.

Thought he would have had a bowl earlier though, including in 1st innings.

Well yeah it's gone past that stage now. Just feels as though not tried alot this innings.

Fair play to Windies though, batted well til this point..

Whatever happens now, this has been the best test match of the summer. The best wicket by far, but fully expected from the groundsman of the year. Still giving help to the bowlers and batters equally after 5 days.

Maybe we should send him down to Lords, as their wickets are consistently very poor. Like a road for the first couple of days and then like a cart track afterwards.

You know it's not your day when Egham can't get a wicket @)

Fair play to the Windies. What a turn around from the last game.

Can Yorkshire do the same in the second half?

Well played West Indies, you have to take your hat off to any team that makes 320 in last innings so comfortably. Sets up a great decider too.

2nd Test

August 29 2017, 6:54 PM

Well done the West Indies. A thoroughly deserved result particularly given their humiliation in the 1st Test.
Questions the pundits will ask though:-
1 Should Root have batted first given that it turned out the best day for bowlers was Day 1?
2 Should he have declared when they could have added maybe 30-40 more runs?

Never known a Test Match with so many dropped catches (on both sides). Any one of these taken could have changed the outcome dramatically.

Hopefully Team England will now realise that bowlers habpve to be match fit. Toby Roland-Jones has been taking wickets for fun. Woakes batted well but looked poor with the ball, basically because he hasn't played enough.

Great game of cricket. I am surprised at myself that I am pleased Windies won. Dont think I would have enjoyed a late collapse if they lost.
Joe Root looked a bit lost when he knew the game was up.
Not confident about the Ashes this winter but dont think Aussies pulling any trees up.

Looking forward to the Lords Test when I thought it might have been a bit of a souless affair before.

Great entertainment, but two very average sides in the history of test cricket.

I could not believe the stat about hundreds in both innings.

Good news

August 29 2017, 8:24 PM

I felt a bit sorry for Joe but I don't think he will cop too much stick.

It seemed like the right decision to declare and have a few overs at them and 321 looked to be enough. A couple more dropped catches today and a lacklustre bowling display by Moeen didn't help.

Cricket was the winner you would say and as it's the Windies I don't begrudge them the win.

Lots of brownie points for the pitch and ticket pricing for Headingley, every little bit of positive PR is useful for future allocations.

2nd Test | England v West Indies at Headingley (Match thread)

August 29 2017, 8:57 PM

Been there last two days, excellent value & atmosphere & good cricket by two flawed teams. For entertainment value an interesting declaration, but, please Joe don't do that when one up and two to play against Australia or India.

More importantly has Shai Hope passed the audition to be our overseas player next year if available for the season? Seems to have bedded in on the Headingley wicket ok. Is it too much to Hope for? Hope we sign the right Hope as well.
