Fresh new day

September 13 2017, 8:12 AM

Unfortunately Surrey get to keep the runs they scored on day one so not really a blank canvas.

Anyway, good luck to the team, coach and all traveling support.

Here's hoping things at the Oval, Taunton and Uxbridge go the way of the visiting teams for the rest of the matches.

Bright, clear, cool and windy here today. I cannot go and am not sure I would if I could. Perhaps the team could do their best for the nice couple I met who have driven their motor home down from the Broad Acres and are coming in by bus every day to cheer the team. They were not well-served yesterday, though any bowler would struggle on that strip against that top 5.
By the way, isn't Burns's stance wierd? More cringe than crouch ! Will listen to Cally & co. with a due sense of dread.

Yes, my fear is we'll be sending tired batsmen in round about 5 pm to try to reach 400+ to avoid the follow on, and the pitch will suddenly start to look very different.

That is my worry as well, Idleman. When we eventually bat - scoreboard pressure, tired batsmen, fresh bowlers, a fragile batting line-up, no Lyth, it is a heady mix for a batting failure. Hope springs eternal though, but they could well get north of 600 with loads of batting still to come and Sanga still there.

boundaries

September 13 2017, 10:20 AM

Did anyone notice that Mark Church, the Surrey commentator, said that we had conceded 300 in boundaries, yesterday. I reckoned it was "only" 260. Maybe,I am wrong but I got my information from The BBC Cricket website- they hit 65 fours and no sixes. I think Mark( I like his commentaries)counted 75 fours. Anyway, I let Cally know , by email,as 260 sounds better than 300 (a bit).

65 boundaries on cricinfo so 260 by my maths. Excludes extras but not that many!

First 100 (of the innings) for Sanga. Well played.
On target for tilt at the world record maybe?

Was there any info of Coad being rested prior to the game? Or did we just wait til 398-3 before stating rested rather than not selected. Either way a strange one, flat pitch or not you don't have to run him into the ground.

To be fair to the "management", there was talk in mid-season of resting Coad this year and not over-bowling him, despite his very promising start. This looks like a decent game for him to miss.

Wonder if young Fred would have wished to be rested !? He bowled many more overs than today''s youngsters - without injury.

Maybe the plan is to bring the fully rested Coad back for the next match (Warwickshire), the one match we might just win, where he can run through their batting as though he actually is Fred. Like he did at the start of the season. If it works I'll be impressed.

It gets crazier. Coad is "rested" presumably to rest, but comes on as sub fielder. Why not Carver or Shutt?

He's bowled 17 overs in about 6 weeks. Must be shattered the lad.

I don't buy into the idea if he bowled this week he wouldn't be able to perform next week. Infact he's produced back to back performances already this season.

Are Surrey losing wickets through slogging or has Brooks found a purple patch belatedly?

Well what happens if it rains next week - not a time to rest your best seamer with all points being important at this stage of CC.

I'm rather hoping it'll rain for the rest of this week . . .
