Lovely start to the day in South London, sunny, some high cloud and blue sky: no real breeze. Can we hold out until Tea when the rain is forecast?

I'm optimistic that we can - and we'll therefore come out with more points than Middlesex.

A Somerset victory seems assured, which is annoying - but at least it'll end the Essex sideshow, so we can all concentrate on the important stuff. I'm hoping, considering our final game, that the same will happen to Essex as happened to us in 2001:

For those who have erased that (and the following season) from their minds.

Not terminal but important

We should be able to and I think we can hold out for the day, a bit of help from the weather around tea time would be welcome so I can get on with my life.

I think it's important that we end the day third from bottom and not in the relegation places so that the remainder of the season is in our hands.

Back in 2001, Anthony McGrath made 116* and 73 in our innings defeat by Surrey, so he wasn't one who lost focus after we had won the title. I don't imagine Essex will, either, but they will certainly be vulnerable.

Interesting stat on Cricinfo, that the last 5 Championship titles have all been won by teams who won at Scarborough. Durham did so in 2013, ourselves in 2014 and 2015, Middlesex last year, and now Essex.

Let's hope the same applies in 2018 as it means we will be in Div 1.

Double the chance of it happening, with two sides every year playing at Scarborough, but still an interesting stat.

So far so good, but worried about the run rate, 11 runs off the last 10 overs.

At that rate we will never clear the deficit, so will have to bat the whole day out.

I think it's the wickets column we need to worry about most...
Lancashire have now lost - it's all getting a bit tight in the table..

Agree, worthy winners. Unbeaten all season, 4 more wins than any other county and mostly home-grown players. Mags & Silvers have done a magnificent job there.

If only the pair of them had been without a county at the end of last season, when we were appointing a new coach. Who knows!!

Whatever happens this afternoon, we should congratulate Marsh and Lees for their spirited efforts in both innings and setting up very good chance of taking 9 points and finishing level with Somerset and perhaps above Middlesex, leaving a most interesting conclusion to the CC season. With the other two meeting in the last fixture, we need to set our stall out to beat Warwickshire.

Agreed. Well done both Marsh and Lees but the jobs not done yet.

Get a lead of 150 by tea and stick them back in.....(joking emoji to insert)

We will get 10 points if we draw, which will put us 1 pt ahead of Somerset. Middlesex can get a maximum of 9 pts for the draw, so they will also be 1 point behind us if they get all 9.

It could be at the end of the day, Yorkshire 124, Somerset 123, Middlesex 123. Next week, Middlesex host Lancashire, Somerset travel to Surrey.

I stand corrected Stu, was thinking draw was only 4 points. If we manage to draw today, our fate will be in our own hands next week. Could be interesting if Hampshire declared now and invited Middlesex to set them target 😀

Yes, very good effort from these two, although still some work to be done: due to the relatively slow scoring rate I reckon we'll need to bat for another 33 overs or so (we would then be in the region of 110 ahead with 12 overs remaining).

Marsh continuing the recent tradition of our T20 specialist overseas players actually performing better in the other formats! Handscombe similar earlier in the year in that he struggled in the format he was mainly signed for but did very well in 50 over cricket.

Another hour seen off by Lees and Marsh. 45 overs remaining with 2 to be taken off for innings break if required.
