Trego is making one of his (increasingly rare) attempts to dig Somerset out of the mire at the Oval. They're effectively 56 for 6 at lunch. Relegation could become a shoot-out between Patterson and Trego - with the bat!

Off-piste, in Div 2 Northants have scored a decisive win off Notts to keep themselves very much in the promotion race. Very pleased for that unfashionable county.

Four Yorkshiremen in that match: Ben Sanderson for Northants and Billy Root, Brett Hutton and Luke Wood for Notts., who also included Pujara.

Somerset now in big trouble. 78-8 effectively. Sunny here in London.

And Hants making a right Horlicks of a chase made possible by a great fightback by the Champions. may land themselves deeply in the mix at this rate. Hope we are not looking to too many points out of Chelmsford.

Sam Cook bowling like a young Waqar Younis down at Southampton. Looks like a serious talent.

Surrey need 142 to win in the final session. If they go for it there is a remote chance of a Somerset win.

It's really important for Yorkshire that Surrey get these 143 runs. Even if they win, only one team in the country will have won more CC games than Yorkshire this season (Essex). Only one other team will have won as many (Lancs.).

But it doesn't make any difference to who wins the league which is all that really matters

It would really put cat among the pigeons if Surrey lose leaving six counties vying for runner up spot or being relegated! Without Sangakkara, Surrey would probably have been relegated, which shows value of an experienced overseas player for full season.

Of course the other speculation is how different our season would have been had we had Sangakarra batting for us! Certainly runner up, possibly champions.

Certainly do not want surrey to win today.

A draw would be ideal.

Gives us a better chance to finish runners up

Great result, Surrey have won.

Just need 7 points now next week and we can not be overtaken by Somerset, even if they get 24 points.

Stu, you are missing the point.

If somst get 24 points against middx, how many will middx get?

they have to score 3 more than us and lose.....not something that it is easy to do, especially on what will undoubtedly be a result pitch. realistically 3 points from the essex match will probably be enough....even just a single point could well be enough, and this all supposes that somst win.

then as an added insurance hants need a better result next week than us to stand a chance of overtaking us.

a surrey draw would have been better for us as they would then also have needed a better result than us next week to get above us....and yet from our viewpoint a draw or somst defeat made no difference, they still have to beat middx to get ahead of us

I would be delighted if Northants were to find a way of gaining promotion. Amidst all the talk of former Yorkshire players making an impact in management, no-one has mentioned Ripley, that I can recall. His achievements at Northampton have been outstanding over several years.
