Re: Championship | Yorkshire vs Warwickshire at Headingley (Day Three)

September 21 2017, 1:52 PM

Hameed and Lancs update: With rain at the ODI sports extra are back at Lords. Lancs now 6 down and its unclear whether Hameed will bat. Reading between the lines I'd suggest its unlikely unless its very close. Lancs need another 70.

At Headingly yesterday as I climbed the steps on the rugby side into the 'football' stand balcony, I was thinking that I've only ever attended one RL game at the ground. 1983 Challenge cup semi when Featherstone edged out Bradford Northern 11 - 6. I've just watched 30 minutes worth of highlights on YouTube, Featherstone were magnificent. If ever a team wanted Wembley, it was Fea that day.

Lancs chase now down to 65, no more news about Hameed.

Good that Trott has gone but I still nervous about our position.

Bit more about the radio commentary. Mike Gatting has been on commentary on Sports extra from Lords - good to hear him, obviously loves his county cricket. Also heard Jimmy Anderson making his TMS debut when the coverage briefly went to the rain effect ODI, again thought he was very good. If I was Swann I'd be worried, Jimmy planning for his future.

Nerve-wracking and not going well. Somerset draw, Middlesex win, and we lose. Or Surrey win, it rains and Middlesex draw (surely Lancashire can't win now) and we win. Big, big difference on which to go into the last games. Been tense 'watching' from California. Hope to be there for the fourth day tomorrow. But the tension is awful. Come on bowlers, pull some magic.

NLOP gang can be smug. 84-5. We will win this game. Somerset will not win theirs.

Would say we are slight favourites at the moment but can all change quickly.

If we go down, we have nobody else to blame but ourselves. Why are Brooks and Bresnan bowling when we need wickets?

Agreed marsker.

Bowlers need rests. Some times you need experience.

How many wickets have Bres and Brooks taken in their career?

Having said that, if they could take a few more today please....

And sometimes you just need to trust in the judgement of the captain to get it right...

Getting worse. Middlesex won, Somerset look like starting a fightback, we could quite well lose this under pressure in the second innings. Or is the pitch improving?

Mood brightened a bit with Somerset wicket and Bresnan's strike. Still looks like we'll be set a testing target though?

Football managers frequently have to make tough calls of this nature. The more pertinent question about messages perhaps concerns the hiring of Brathwaite. I simply think that, for reasons given above, TKC shoukd have played in this game. All things considered, including fielding, Lees is the one I would have rested, given Brathwaite and the selection of five seamers. My preference though would have been to play all three batsmen and just four seamers.

And if we went down that route most would have left out Fisher.....

Or Bresnan. Both of whom have contributed in this game.

Selection is easy in the abstract, but in the run up to a game, you are always second guessing likely performance levels, and the eleven they came up with - on balance - was probably the best for the circumstances.

As it is two quick wickets for Bresnan

Think if was can be chasing less then 200 I would back us (just).
Time for players to show us why we were Champions less then 2 years ago.

5 seamers cost us 100+ runs in Warks first inns.

You never need 5 seamers. Extra batsman and part time spin would have been my choice pre match. The fact that Patel was turning it big on day 2 suggests that the decision was even worse.

End result won't matter as Warks are a poor side but going forward it's deeply concerning.

Still just in front thanks to Bresnan. Alibor's tactical genius strikes again.

I agree that you never need five seamers. How much it has cost us (if anything) is speculation surely. An extra batsman might have gained us a few runs, but at the expense of which seamer? All of them have had their moments in this game. Patto has done as good a job performing the sort of containing role we might have expected a spinner to fulfil. I just dont think that Carver or Rafiq would offer anything like the threat of a Patel - indeed on a spinning pitch I think Lyth is the best bet to extract some turn at least.

And the reason Lyth's only bowled 3 overs in the match is...
