Just because one of the best and most consistent spinners in county cricket for the last five years was spinning it big (and not sure reports support this as he bowled more in a containing role) doesn't mean we pick a spinner when the best option was Rafiq.

We could always argue Bres is playing as a batsman and Ballance has pulled a tactical master stroke by asking him to bowl a few overs.....

Nerves

September 21 2017, 4:00 PM

My nerves were shot listening to the game from Lords.

Fair does, Finn has stepped up after the TRJ injury and done the business helped by some good catching.

We need these last 3 wickets for not too many more runs.

It's not a lot of good people talking about selection now, it is what it is and the players in the 11 on the pitch need to do the necessary.

You need to be there to criticise bowling changes, Warwickshire relied on Wright and Patel yesterday for a reason, Rankin and Sidebottom were too expensive and ineffective. I presume Gary Ballance is making the same kind of judgements today while still rotating the bowlers.

Another wicket for Bressie as I type. It would be nice to be well on the way to the total for none down tonight. Might have to scamper over tomorrow.

Exactly at 50-6 we threw away 100 runs.

We could have played TKC instead of one of the seamers. But which one? And would he have scored more runs than Bresnan or Fisher?

We could have played a specialist spinner (correction: specialist slow bowler) but would he have bowled as well as Jeetan Patel? Or more than Adam Lyth?

The team management has weighed up the pros and cons and has come up with this particular XI from the resources available, with all the specialist knowledge to hand. It is not an exact science!

Our whole season is going to hinge on the run chase. To me, it's 50-50, chasing whatever it turns out to be against a bunch of decent seamers plus one Test class spinner.

It this instant it's Warwicks 155 ahead with 8 down but Patel still in. I'm already nervous, and if it gets to over 180 to 200 I'll be bricking it.

I'm still mystified as to how we threw away 100 runs on first day.

Warwickshire have always had a better lower order than top order and it used to be even better with Barker and Clarke.

I'm not sure Rafiq or Carver would have stopped Patel any more than Bres and Patto. Has the crystal ball moved on from Blackpool?

50-6. You think expected runs is 219? Why did everyone come on disappointed at the end of the days play with their total.

I suspect after you hailed the appointment of Gale as genius and a masterstroke, you'd find yourself justifying an 8 pronged pace attack.

I hope they've picked out a good one from a bowlers perspective.

If it's going to spin so much, why don't we give Lyth a go? Also they can get caught trying to slog him!

I find myself not being critical of the team until the game is over. If you had offered Yorkshire the fact that Warickshire would be all out first dig for 219, they would have snapped your hand off.

Without Rash, we haven't got a good enough slow bowler, simple as that

That's right Harrogate, before the start of play you would have accepted 219 all out. However, having been 49-6 before lunch, they shouldn't have got anywhere near 219.

First day recovery? A brief spell of Bad Brooks after lunch, bloody good batting by Bell and Patel plus some luck for Rankin. And remember there were three rookies in the six wickets that fell before lunch; Banks looked good, especially, but ask Harry Brook how easy it is to move up a level.

Patel out - just Big Bad Boyd and Ryan Mark II in our way now, 172 ahead.

FWIW i wasn't saying i would have selected a spinner (Lyth to Patel in first inns aside). I would have picked TKC. The point about the 5 seamers is temptation to throw the ball around trying everyone rather than just bowling your best options.

Championship Yorkshire vs Warwickshire at Leeds (day 3)

September 21 2017, 4:47 PM

I wonder whether we are rather too fixated on Patel. Is the Headingley pitch a noted spinner's paradise on day four ? In any case, I see that Patel currently lies 10th. in (bottom club) Warwickshire's bowling averages. His economy rate is good but he has just 30 wickets, prior to this match, at over 37 apiece.

Oh blimey - why do we spend so much time disagreeing with each other...?
Life is too short.

175 to win - at least we know what we need to do and our destiny is in our ownhands.
Game on.

I hope Adam plays his normal game.
