Derbyshire 4 day washout

Whilst thinking it was a bit late in the year to use an outground I was originally sympathetic to Derbyshire as they suffered another total washout at Queens park, Chesterfield.

Subsequently found out the reason was that the club were using the County ground for a pop concert.

I hope the club get a strong reprimand from the ECB and restriction are placed on what time of year they can use this out ground.

Luckily Kent were a few points away from having any chance of promotion.

Derbyshire have already announced that they will only play at Chesterfield in the main summer although that doesn't bring any weather guarantees

As for the pop concert you can't blame them for trying to maximise income streams.

...but shouldn't teams be punished for using unfit pitches?

The weather was not so bad, the problem was that the ground was simply not suitable for autumn cricket. Had Kent been a few points closer to promotion they would have quite rightly be livid. As it is, I think they have complained to the ECB about it.

They will escape as any punishment will then draw attention to similar situation at Uxbridge last week for Middlesex who found that the owners of their main ground had leased it out to the ECB for a test match.

Unsure if they'll be any outgrounds soon, given the increase in health and safety and the fear of being sued in modern culture.
Will there be any cricket in September at all soon, with the fear a player or spectator may slip on an autumn leaf.
I'm not joking sadly....

It's a cricket ground first

Think the wet area of Old Trafford that delayed the ODI last week was an area with no grass on it due to a couple of concerts.

Not quite so black and white though as one concert was a short notice job because the Manchester Arena wasn't available, and the other was the charity concert to raise funds for those affected by the bombing at the Arena.

Hopefully lessons learned and cricket will take priority on cricket grounds.

But spare a thought for poor old Lancashire. Without those pop concerts, they wouldn't be able to afford all those Kolpak players.
