Very similar to mine.

I had Root, Bairstow, Ballance, Stokes from 3 to 6 in that order, with the other 7 exactly the same.

Not convinced with workload Stokes should be higher than 6.

To be honest, I would have a few "investment" players in there but I fully accept an Ashes tour is not the place to start.

Cook
Stoneman
Hameed (If fit)
Root C
Clarke
Stokes
Bairstow WK
Ali
C. Overton
Broad
Anderson

12: Malan
13: Foakes WK
14: Wood
15: Woakes
16: Finn
17: Crane

Probably go with Rey's team too, mainly due to lack of credible competition for the batting spots. I like the grind Hameed has shown towards the end of the season but if his hands can't survive India and England he has no chance in Aus.

Reys team for me too.

Dropping bairstow as keeper now is madness in view of him improvement with the gloves

Reys team but I don't rate Malan. If Hameed was fit he'd open with Stoneman at 3 and Malan dropping out. Without Hameed, I'd replace Malan with Ballance.

Team for Brisbane

September 24 2017, 8:52 PM

Picking them today my 11 would be:

Cook
Stoneman
Malan
Root
Ballance
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Anderson

Others in the squad.

Foakes
Toby-Roland-Jones
Plunkett
Hales
Compton.

There's a lions squad in the background so keep the young guys, C Overton,
Leach, Crane, Wesley, T Curran, Duckett etc playing rather than acting as drinks waiters.

Full squad:

Cook
Stoneman
Hales
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Wood
Anderson

+Foakes
Hameed
Ballance
Plunkett
Finn
Leach

Forget Westley & Malan -they will never convincingly make the step up from county cricket IMO.

Lots of interest in Hameed. I can't quite make up my mind about him. Is he actually in form at the moment or is he just grinding out his innings in the hope of something better? Because the pace of his scoring in county cricket in recent weeks doesn't augur well for a potental Ashes series. No doubt batting time is an important quality, but he makes Compton (who was dropped because he was considered too pedestrian) look like Sehwag at the moment.

He's broken a finger, just had an operation and wasn't exactly in great form before, so surely can't be picked. Hope he's one for the future though if he can solve these injury problems.

He struggles to get the ball off the square without a finger injury so god knows where he will get runs with a broken digit.

Vastly overrated due to lack of credible options and the failures of Compton, Robson Jennings, Lyth Hales some of whom are better off second time around than Hameed

I can't have Hameed at any price. He could bat for 100 balls and be on 10. At test level he is bound to get a few balls in that 100 that would get anyone.

My choice, but it won't be is

Cook
Stoneman
Root
Balance
Stokes
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Plunkett/Rashid
Broad
Anderson

Might be a touch bias!

I also certainly wouldn't take the gloves off Bairstow, he's kept well this summer and loves keeping, damaging the confidence and morale of one of England's key players would be an incredibly stupid move in my opinion.

My main doubt is number three. Stoneman has shown enough both in his few Test appearances and against our strong bowling attack, but I don't think either Westley or Malan are anywhere near Test standard so I don't see any point in persevering with either. I share the concerns about Hameed in terms of scoring rate and susceptibility to breaking his hands on bouncy pitches, while Root has said he doesn't want to bat 3 and neither Ballance or Hales are suited to batting in the top 3 in red ball cricket. I really don't know who I would go for there... Vince may not be the worst option; he's got a stupid shot in him but at least he looks to have the raw ability to face Test-quality bowling unlike Westley and Malan.

Cook
Stoneman
???
Root
Hales/ Ballance (dependent on form)
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
Woakes
Broad
Anderson
