Re: Championship | Essex vs Yorkshire at Chelmsford (Day One)

September 25 2017, 2:03 PM

Agree with you Gary - it would be a boring forum if we all agreed with each other and the Club all of the time. I just wish that those running the Club would communicate better about what is going on eg today with availability and selection. There is still much to do today as we had Essex in similar state in first innings at Scarborough but then their captain took game away from us and last week we has a very poor afternoon session on the first day after fine pre lunch performance. However good chance of maximum bowling points surely. If these two seamers cannot remove their captain soon, would like to see Carver have a go - we failed to bowl Rashid against him at Scarborough when he was in no trouble against any of our seamers.
That did the trick - Patto got him 😀

That's that silly little 5 seamer experiment and debate shelved. Well bowled lads.

How do you reach that conclusion out of interest ?

At the moment we have used four seamers only so the fifth bowler could be anything and it wouldn't matter.

The issue is whether Carver will do better than whoever our fifth best seamer is and that's still to be prov n

We have not played 5 seamers in this match.

5 seamers will normally get exactly the same number of wickets as 4 seamers as each one bowls more overs to cover for the 5th seamer. We only need a draw and 1 batting point, so why not strengthen the batting by playing at least 6 batsmen, even 7. However, we go the other way by weakening the batting and bringing Carver in for Bresnan.

Doing very well so far, but we need a draw and 5 batting points. Will we get it with our tail starting at 7??

Playing 5 seamers just means you under bowl your better ones to give everyone a go. Not necessary.

Are we now paying the price of not selecting five seamers? Bowlers starting to tire, and the skipper doesn't dare to bowl the spinner...?

...okay, spinner now on happy.gif

At a time when Yorkshire's batting has come up to much scrutiny, it seems perverse to go with 5 batsman, a specialist keeper and 5 frontline bowlers. If Essex bag a couple of early wickets and they have quality seam bowlers in Porter and Wagner, it puts immediate pressure on what's left of the middle order. There is a potential scenario where Jack Leaning or Gary Ballance will be farming the strike with Yorkshire at 5 down.

I would have thought if Bresnan was dropped, then a like for like replacement in Waite or Rafiq comes in and lessons have been learnt from the Middlesex selection at Lord's when Bresnan was replaced with a bowler. If Yorkshire somehow get relegated from this match, heads have got to roll as far as I am concerned.

First we won't be relegsted and second you have more confidence in rafiq holding a bag than I do

Rafiq might be great at holding a bag, it is him holding a bat that is worrying.

To whom it may concern. Please read my two earlier posts . I said clearly that first ,i do not agree with the selection of the side for this game . ie the side presumably selected by Andrew Gale .

Second , i agreed with Alibor the the communication from the club today was poor .

I was just asking / wishing / hoping that others who likewise do not agree try not to resort to childish name calling .

Please try to get it .

If Somerset do not reach 250 and we get one more wicket, does that not ensure our safely, providing no penalty points?

Yes, I think that is correct. I more bowling point and we have 148, Somerset even with a win can only get 147.
