Re: Championship | Essex vs Yorkshire at Chelmsford (Day One)

What happens if we finish level on points with Somerset? Do they go above us as they beat us?

235-9. One more wicket at Taunton for 14 runs and we are safe, as we are bound to get one more ourselves.

Somerset had to get 300 to have any chance of finishing above us.

Yes safe!

Even if we don't take another wicket Somerset can only go level with us and we would say above by virtue of fewer defeats.

1 more wicket and that point will see us safe, win, draw or lose.

Yep, Div 1 next year. Phew.

Now let's try and end in the top three.

Somerset very likely to be down now sad.gif . They have to win and get Middx out for less than 250

It`s becoming a habit

From the OS

"....Essex will receive the County Championship trophy at the conclusion of the game, meaning it will be the fourth year in a row Yorkshire have been there for the presentation."

Tykes stay up

September 25 2017, 5:02 PM

With the Tykes on 147 points and Somerset on 128 points and with 19 points left to play for, the Wurzels can only tie Yorkshire on points. The tie would then be broken the on the basis of most wins and failing that, fewest losses. Thus, Yorkshire are assured of staying up, since even if Somerset win and tie us on wins, Yorkshire will still have one less loss even if we lose this match.

We are safe, pending any deductions!

Harmer is no mug. Averages 25 with the bat I see.

What surprised me more is that Tendo averages in the high 40s. I always though of him as a talented one day player, but his first class record is outstanding.

Yes was surprised by his 25 average, not noticed him score many runs this season, not that he's needed to.

Nice tidy return for Carver, pleased for him. Possibly a bigger role to play 2nd inns.

Very pleased for Carver (and his girl friend), especially after his T20 torment. And obviously very relieved that Somerset's score means that we remain in Division 1. But it is a high risk selection tactic, going into a game with only 5 front-line batsmen, gambling on the course of a game between our rivals. Or am I looking for logic where there is just confused or compromised thinking ?

Anyhow the emergence this season of Coad, Fisher,Waite and Carver together with the signing of KC bodes well for next season and beyond. Our appetites have been whetted.
