Re: Championship | Essex vs Yorkshire at Chelmsford (Day One)

Enjoyed todays play.
Bad Brooks bowling in his first spell today but apart from that up until lunch we were excellent with Coad in particular.
Left off the hook a little at 80 odd for 5 at lunch to let them get over 200.
Feel this game 50/50 with Essexs attack and our flaky batting and long tail.

I know Essex have just become Champions but thought size of the crowd was really good on a murky Monday. Would estimate 2,500.

Glad we are safe and if I was a nuetral would love to be at Taunton with sub plots with the pitch and everything.

Pitch penalty

September 25 2017, 6:58 PM

Middlesex very, very unhappy with the state of Taunton wicket. Now with Middlesex 18 for 3 if they concede a 1st innings lead, they will have to bat last on a raging bunsen burner. They must be bookies favourites to go down now, last year's champions. However if the pitch inspector intervenes Somerset could still go down with a pitch penalty points deduction ..I'm sure this story is going to run and run especially if wickets continue to tumble. From our point of view we can go for it tomorrow with the pressure off. 300 and 3 batting bonus points and we go on to win just might get us 2nd place. Now wouldn't that be nice.

Well done Carver. Shame he wasn't on earlier but we don't tend to allow a spinner a bowl before tea on the first day do we!

I suspect it may be a nail in Rafiqs 4 day coffin now.

So we've survived with little melodrama and all we need to do now is beat Essex so they collect their silverware with a defeat on their home patch!

As for runners-up spot, with the wicket turning a lot on first day at Old Trafford, a result is very likely (Surrey or Lancs win) unless weather intervenes a lot.

Pleased for Carver, and I think he's shown that we should always include a spinner in our attack; sometimes you just need to change things up if a partnership develops or a tail-ender is getting settled.

It will be interesting to see how our thin batting line-up copes against Porter, Wagner and Harmer tomorrow. A win to deny Essex the unbeaten season would certainly leave a nice taste after a disappointing season...

Thanks Howden, it's always a pleasure to have your voice and info from over the Pennines.

You might be pleased to hear that, now that Warwickshire are going down, and Yorkshire staying up, Yorkshire and Lancashire will be the only two teams to have spent 14 years in the First Division since the splitting of the Championship (info from a man called Farmer White on the Zummerzet members' forum)

Arrived home from Spain after midnight but glad to see that Carver eventually got a bowl and finished off their tail end after almost 60 overs of seam! Delighted that our place in top division is now secure and it would be nice if we bat well today and finish 2nd.
