Rack up 400 and stick them in just before close of play with a wicket or two ideally.

Don't mind who gets the runs but batting once a la the Dizzy days has to be the objective!

First objective is to get past the follow on score. Look what happened to Hampshire last week

Well hopefully Fisher and Patto at 7 and 8 will focus the top order batsmen's minds- we're up against a very good bowling attack and can't expect those two to dig us out of a hole again.

Beware Cook. And the rest of them. I can't see us reaching 100.

They have a very good bowling attack (in fact they are a vg team all round). Lets see how things go, but we are very weak in batting, with Hodd at 6 then 5 bowlers.

I am at least looking forward to seeing the game with Essex's live streaming- A regular point brought up here but I'd rather pay a subscription to YCCC than SKY

I agree with thirdumpire. JG was very good at focusing on a big score. Breaking an innings into manageable chunks. Drinks break, lunch etc. Just batting. If you do that and do it well, then follow ons etc take care of themselves. If you focus on a follow on, then the danger is that you play for an artificial target rather than conditions.

Strangely optimistic about this innings. No idea why. Away against the champions with the weakest batting order in recent memory. I think we'll get a modest first innings lead. (Before going on to lose.)

The ball wasn't swinging and Essex have persuaded the umpires to change it. Am I alone in thinking that if a new ball starts behaves very differently, the batsmen ought to be allowed to object to it and request another?

Braithwaite's been an absolute steal, he must be up there with Sarfraz.

If both the fielding side and the batting side were able to demand that the ball be changed, would the umpires have sufficient balls to do it ?

Never thought Brathwaite would do much for us - he is ultra defensive and puts too much pressure on a partner to score quickly. However he helped to take shine off new ball - except it has been changed 😀

I wasn't convinced on the braitgwaite signing either, hopefully not considering him for next year.
Just seen the dismissal a straight bat would have been a good idea!

Perhaps someone can correct me, but according to the laws of cricket regarding the ball.
"If during play, the ball cannot be found/recovered or the umpires agree that it has become unfit for play through normal use, the umpires shall replace it with a ball that has comparable wear."

How does lack of movement make it unfit to play?

You can't change the ball for lack of movement. You have to convince the umpires it has gone out of shape.

Score prediction

I am going to hope that we get to 347.
Anything over 300 could win.

Damn Lyth out.

There is no way it had gone out of shape after what 9-12 overs.

Again as expected, Lees has gone cheaply. When he batted (very briefly) at Scarborough he looked bereft of confidence and to include him again against Essex was both risky and unnecessary as K-C should have been selected. The absence of Bresnan looks likely to be another weakening of our top six. I am not optimistic of many batting points unless these two and Leaning get big scores. Oh dear, Lyth as well - he needs partner.
