Just a couple of days to go now.

Thought I'd try my hand at predicting the sides who will take the field.

Warner Cook
Bancroft Stoneman
Smith Vince
Handscombe Root
Khawaja Malan
S Marsh Bairstow
Paine Ali
Starc Woakes
Hazlewood Ball
Cummins Broad
Lyons Anderson

We probably do play each other too often just lately but really looking forward to it.

I think it will be close and keeping players fit for the entire series will be crucial.

Agree that those will probably be the teams. Don't understand Ball though. Never really rated him as a Test bowler anyway, think he will get taken to the cleaners on flat Aussie wickets, plus he has missed most of the warm ups and Overton has by and large done enough with the chances he has had to merit a place in the team.

Can't shake off the nagging feeling that it won't even be close. Hopefully not 5-0 again but this England team don't draw many so it very well could be.

I think if you pick a composite team it could be

Cook
Stoneman
Smith
Root
Handscombe
Bairstow
Woakes
Starc
Hazlewood
Anderson
Lyon

giving England the edge... in theory

Aussies lacking an allrounder. The 4 man attack is strong but feels risky when Cummins and Starc are injury prone. Obviously they can't bring in Bird or Sayers as a 5th or the tail will be ridiculously long.

Warner not in the composite XI?? Really? I'm not having Handscomb either.

Cook
Warner
Khawaja
Root
Smith
Bairstow
Moeen
Woakes
Starc
Hazelwood
Anderson

On the Aussie attack: I'll be amazed if both Starc and Cummins are both still fit by Xmas.

There are many comparisons here, albeit different styles.

Cook v Warner
Root v Smith
Anderson v Hazlewood

Where we have the edge is Bairstow and Ali down the order.

Where they have the edge is Starc who could destroy England like Johnson did.

They have the edge because of home conditions.

If we get Stokes back, we have a chance.

"Left Woakes out with a heavy heart. "

An unusual injury.

French people often suffer from 'heavy legs' apparently.

Not fussed about the Aussie side.

Can not see any case for including Vince.

Cook, Stoneman, Malan, Root, Ballance, Bairstow, Ali, Woakes, Overton, Broad, Anderson.

I see rain is forecast for the Gabba, which might make England feel more at home.
