Thought he'd signed for Surrey. Turns out that was Mitchell Marsh.

Seems like he's signed for Glamorgan for the next 2 seasons.

Strike another one off the list (although I'm far from convinced that he's actually that good, but in the bigger picture of who might be available and for how long he represented a solid option).

Decent Championship option, too one paced in t20 for my liking though.

That said if Ballance was keen, what went wrong?

It did strike me as a little odd that Ballance would be allowed to talk up the signing only for him to go elsewhere a couple of days later. The timescales suggest that it was never really on the table.

i hope we have something lined up, otherwise it looks like a lot of counties are getting in first.

Which counties are getting on first? Only Surrey and Glamorgan appear to me to have made a new signing.h

Glamorgan did admit they expect Marsh to be playing IPL for the start of the season and will need to sign someone else as cover.

IPL in 2018 is scheduled from the 5th of April to the 31st of May.

We don't have the schedule yet for the CC and RLODC but I think that kind of absence is unacceptable and was probably a deal breaker as far as Yorkshire were concerned, if indeed a deal was being talked about.

The fact that Marsh will be playing in the IPL is the same as the majority of overseas players. It is almost impossible now to get any overseas player that will be available every match, in all formats and all season, that is why going down the kolpack route is the best option, but Gale, after his remarks re Prince, has probably shot his options in that department, and the club also appear to be ruling out the kolpack option.

It appears that one of our (alledged) options has gone elsewhere.

Of course the usual big names and a lot of Aussie hangers on, hoping to hit the big time, will be at the IPL.

I do though think there will be enough good players around early season who don't have an IPL place and are more suited to the CC and 50 over cricket.

I'd be enthusiastic about someone of the class of Pujara returning, slightly less keen on Brathwaite, but these are the type of players who don't play T20 and may be available for a good part of the season.

If the fixtures follow last years formula we will have played 4 CC matches and the entirety of the RLODC group stages before the IPL pack become available.

We will need somebody for the T20 of course, but we might well have one or more of Plunkett, Willey and Rashid surplus to England's requirements and available for the Blast.

This is just embarrassing. First Gillespie and now Marsh. Here's me thinking dinosaurs were extinct, what idiots have we got at YCCC?? "Lump on relegation" going to be phrase of the winter.

I can't see the relevance of Gillespie's appointment at Sussex. What's that got to do with Yorkshire in 2018? There isn't a job for him at present, and no evidence he would want to return. Reappointments of successful coaches/managers don't usually bring success in football.

Marsh? I'd have been happy with him, but there are availability issues. I suspect Yorkshire feel he's not quite what they need all things considered.

The management make mistakes, like all management, but they're hard-working and generally thoughtful. Moxon is generally highly thought of in the game. He's not an idiot, and his actions are usually based on careful thinking, not stupidity or laziness.

Ryan? Well, in many ways I'd love to see him back, but if he goes to Essex it will be because there's a bowling coach job on offer. We gave up that sort of structure when Dizzy came. And haven't we all being rather suggesting that we've had a bit too much of appointing our own to coaching positions?

Could be worth giving Glenn Maxwell a go again. Currently 213 not out in a Sheffield shield game.

Maxwell

November 24 2017, 8:54 AM

I wouldn't mind Maxwell but he's sure to be in the IPL so would miss 4 or 5 CC matches and the One day cup.

He'd be a good shout for the T20 blast and late season. Downside is he's probably just a couple of decent innings away from an Aussie recall.

Pushes his First Class average over 40. Not bad for 'The Appalling' one.

Personally would rather someone who will dig in and stay around at the top of the order. Ideally right handed too.
