Keep in it

Not terrifically optimistic but ever hopeful.

I think it might be a close run thing and I'm sure we can beat them, but, everything needs to go right and we need a bit of luck.

Worry that playing with a spinner who seems to have zero confidence in his own ability and a No3 who seems to have a fatal flaw in his batting will tip the balance their way.

A good first day, whether we bat or bowl will hopefully set up an exciting contest.

At last

Well earned century from Malan.

One step forward two steps back though as finding a good one we might have lost one of the greats as Cook fails again.

I'll Not mention the chap at the other end yet.

That's brilliant. Much better than I expected when I tuned in in the early hours to hear Joe strangled down the leg side (not literally). And JB has used his head in a far more constructive way. Pity it took us two tests to start playing.

And very well played Malan. I'm not so annoyed now that his parents were unable to spell 'David'.

Really pleased we have had a good day at last after last 2 tests and the soap opera the off field the tour was becoming.
Need 400+ to really put the Aussies under pressure.

Funny what happens when Johnny is allowed out to play and bat with the batsmen rather than the tail

Lovely hundred for Jonny. He had to work hard for it. A pleasure to watch.

Bowlers

December 15 2017, 6:24 AM

Congratulations to YJB, it's a flat pitch but the Aussie quick bowlers have made it a challenge for anybody.

England bowlers proved they can't bat against pace, let's hope their bowling is better.

Feel this is going to be another of those tests where its 1 foot forward 2 steps back.

Vaughan just said he would rather be in England's shoes than Australia's due to runs on the board and cracks in the pitch that will widen.

Pronblem with that seems to be that we have to get them out first time and have the bowlers to exploit the conditions second time around.

I just can't see it.

Well done Jonny B

Disappointing day

December 15 2017, 3:19 PM

I think we have frittered away any advantage we gained with the good work on day 1.

If they get close, or get a lead, which is not unlikely, then the pressure is back on our batsmen.

The pitch is going to have to deteriorate a lot for our bowlers to come up with another 17 wickets.

Same as usual, get Smith out and there's a chance.

I'm dreading waking up to Aussie 600-7 and England folding like a pack of cards in second dig....

How many is enough!

Smith making up for his comparative lack of success at this venue.

There is no reason for Australia to pull out anytime soon so 700 is on the cards, unless our bowlers can do anything about it.

Feel when they do pull out an England collapse will follow.

All we can do is hope against hope that it doesn't happen. I wouldn't put cash money on it.

Good to see my fears were wrong.

It’s going to be 600-4 not 7....

I’m struggling to see where wickets will come from with our attack and suspect there may be one of those moments which we saw in New Zealand about 10 years ago when Harmison and Hoggard were dispensed with mid series and Sisebottom came in.

Broad must be at the end of the road and Anderson despite a great spell in the last test must be under threat too. But I don’t see Ball and Woakes and Overton as the answer either.
