Bonkers last half hour led by Root getting out when set playing an attacking shot against the new Ball with 15 minutes left.

His dismissal was the reason for Bairstows dismissal and if it isn’t then the decision not to send in a Nightwatchman even more bonkers.

Not great from our two players changing the course of the game in ten mad minutes to sum up the series

Yup.
In those two dismissals i suspect the game has gone. We'll be lucky to get 300 now.
Who is Daniel Norcross on TMS?
I quite like him but unusually i dont remember him as a former player..?
I also really like Ebony Rainford Brent.

No sensible nightwatchman available, is there?
Re the TMS commentators, Norcross is excellent, as is Ebony. They bring a new voice and perspective, plus good humour. Here is a not exactly comprehensive summary of Dan

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Norcross

I thoroughly like Graeme Swann too, for similar reasons. Ed Smith a little too bland for my taste.
Looks like Deja Vu here, 400 minimum needed, we'll probably get under 300 and face 200+ deficit, unless Mo comes out and plays as we know he can. I can\t see 50 runs from that tail, certainly not with a newish ball.

Deja vu.....all over again.

Early wicket to give hope then little prospect of any wickets thereafter. With no Stokes, Woakes, Overton, Finn, Plunkett or any left armer, the seam attack is reliant on the old lags and they can't go on forever.

Score in sessions

January 5 2018, 10:47 PM

England need a good couple of sessions on the third day or this could get very ugly indeed.

Think I agree with Brian on Bairstow coming out to bat late on the first evening. It was the first over with the new ball with Starc bowling fast, shadows across the pitch, and I think it might have been dangerous for anyone one else in those circumstances. Perhaps Tom Curran could have handled it but it was asking a lot. Anyway the damage has been done now.

At least the England management must know for certain now that Mooen can only ever be classed as a batting all rounder who can bowl a bit of spin.

It will be interesting to see if the first choice spinner for this match does any better. I'm not too optimistic but would love to be proved wrong.

Good body language and self confidence will only get you so far if you can't back it up.

Same crowd moaning about Bairstow being wasted at 7 wanted him to bat 7 here... Fair play to him for not dodging the responsibility.

124 balls without a boundary

January 7 2018, 9:32 AM

Looks like Joe Root is determined not to get himself out this time so it at least shows he is still learning.

Terrible day for England yet again. All the bowlers have been poor and with the exception of Anderson an argument can be made to replace the lot of them.

Never convinced by Vince but now it seems even the solid looking Stoneman has flattered to deceive and may not be a long term fixture.

same old story

January 7 2018, 4:00 PM

it's the same old story that you get in football players on good money who just plod on it is the same with England Anderson and broad just going through the motions on a nice little holiday, and when they come back to England they will be world beaters .

I think anyone who reckons Anderson has been "just going through the motions on a nice little holiday" has been watching a different series.

Joe

January 8 2018, 9:45 AM

Must pay tribute to Joe 'Eddie Paynter' Root for his brave innings today after being in hospital following the hottest day in Sydney's history. Courageous, maybe even foolhardy, but he's setting a great example.
Rest was dire as ever, unfortunately. Only the captain, Anderson, Cook, Malan and Barstow really emerge with any credit after this nightmare tour.

Yep not sure i understand the criticism of Anderson, ok he hasn't got that many wickets but 17 at 27ish is hardly terrible, 70 maidens and series economy of 2.11. Even in this game where everyone else has gone at 3s and 4s he bowled 34 overs for 56. I wish a few more had gone through the motions!

cook

I don't know how you can pay tribute to COOK he has only had one inning and that was on a pudding of a pitch.

For me, only Anderson and Malan come out of the series in credit.

According to Anderson.

I would like to know what is a disaster then?

I think it is hard to criticise Anderson in isolation but the bowling attack is built around him as our strike bowler. In which case 17 wickets isn't good enough. Bowling attritionally isn't his job, taking wickets is.

I think he has a role in the team but if he isn't going to get a hatful then we really do need to find someone who is.

If his low haul is down to the other bowlers leaking runs then perhaps it needs a new bowling attack BUT is it worth building an attack to support Anderson at his age? (I don't know the answer btw)

All-in-all there are more questions than answers after the tour.

Personally - Cook should be asked to play next summer while Stoneman is given a chance to make the spot his own, Vince is out, Root obviously stays (not sure about as captain), Malan stays, Bairstow obviously stays, Stokes back in, Ali given a chance to prove himself as a batsman (he can bowl part time spin but he needs to be in the team because he can bat - I would argue he needs to move up the order to prove himself), Anderson & Broad need to rethink their roles, Woakes needs to get back up to speed but I think he has potential.

So one more quick and a genuine spinner. With an eye on developing another opener. Curran, both Overtons, Wood, TRJ all deserve watching.

It would have been a much closer series with Stokes but it is the spinner and the genuine quick bowler that we were short. But I said that before we flew out.

Whinging Anderson

January 9 2018, 6:09 AM

Seadog 73 stated that only Anderson & Malan finished the tour with any credit. I hope he was only referring to "On the field performances" I have gotten sick of seeing Anderson on our TV whinging incessantly about everything he could think of for excuses in defeat, Australia have not got a top class side by a long way but they wasted their time playing against the garbage England sent over to represent them in Australia, Cane shit me of with the number of occasions he ran up to bowl and stopped before he released the ball, was this some kind of ploy to intimidate our batsmen? and is this a new time wasting plot the poms have come up with? if not he wants his hands smacking and dropping back into District cricket until he tidies up his deliveries....talking of intimidation, I don't think a fielder should be allowed to stand nearer than 5 metres from a batsman for their own safety some of the Poms were hit with the ball when the batsmen struck out. I don't think a batsman should be blamed for any subsequent injury.
I wont be watching any of the remaining matches of the tour and I hope they don't let the whinging Poms take command of our already low standard TVs

Of course I was referring to on field performances. No offence pal, but the rest of your post makes little sense.
