David Willey

I'd like to see him play CC cricket but he may well have shelved his test ambitions and therefore have written himself out of the four day game too.

The way cricket is going there is plenty of room for players to specialise in white ball cricket and even sub-specialise in T20 and, heaven forbid, T10.

We do need the variety a left arm quick can bring, but not just for the sake of it.

Apart from the IPL, most of the other major comps take place outside of our season, so possible for Willey to play a full county season and quite a bit of hit and giggle to fill his coffers. He already does the Big Bash, I would be surprised if he was on the IPL radar. If he did want to give up on four day cricket but continue to have an affiliation with the club, this would have to be on the basis of a salary reduction clearly, or going completely freelance.

Nothing I have seen on those occasions when Willey has played for YCCC in the Championship leads me to conclude that he is even remotely a replacement for Sidebottom. He does swing the ball, but the swing starts from the minute the ball leaves his hand , and therefore, can be "read" all the way. That is not a description of what Ryan did with the ball.

Yes, Lewis, I believe Fisher is much quicker than the others, at least when 100% fit. One good season and he will be in the England frame. He used to be ahead of Sam Curran, for example, but has fallen away through not playing.

I did not 'forget' David Willey; it's just that I don't see him as a CC bowler. I will be delighted if he does turn out to be Sid II. Players do improve, else why pay coaches? But Sid is arguably in contention for an all-time Yorkshire XI; back-up for GH Hirst, better than Bill Bowes? Who can tell?

How do people rank our recent England pace bowlers? Each at his best, though Sid wasn't a Yorks player at his absolute peak.

White, Gough, Hoggard, Silverwood, Sidebottom, Bresnan, Plunkett from the last 20 years - have I forgotten anyone significant? I know a few others played.

Slightly outside your timeframe but Paul Jarvis and Sidebottom (Snr) were good bowlers and could have been very, very good if they'd had any sort of decent backup and hadn't been overbowled to destruction.
