The Reason *Ch. 20*

Meanwhile, Cruz was still being dragged along an alley, screaming, "Heeeelp! Help!" She managed to kick the guy up by his chin, and that enabled her to crawl a few inches away from him. She was struggling to get back on her feet, but she was too weak from the harm he had already done to her.

Since she was unsuccessful, or not quick enough at getting back up on her feet, the guy was coming back to grab her. The sirens were getting closer to them, including Bosco and Yokas' squad car. She could see the cars slamming to a hault, and she reached her hand out from on the ground, screaming for help another time. But they hadn't gotten out of the car yet, so the guy said, "You're supposed to be tough?" and he grabbed her again. She started screaming, as he dragged her up on her feet, and slammed her against a brick wall, holding her up to it.

She kept screaming for help, and he said angrily, "What were you? Some sort of an affirmative action hirer?" She screamed, "Help!" again but this time he punched her square in the jaw, making blood fly from her mouth, immediatly splitting her lip right open. She spit the blood at him, and he was now pressing at her throat with a long, steel pipe. She was slowly losing consciousness. But she heard him say, "You come after me alone? It's gonna take more than that to take me in!" And just as everything was going black...BANG.

Yokas had come to the rescue, believe it or not, and shot the perp. He went down, and then Cruz went down, grasping at her throat, and coughing.
"Are you okay?" Faith called to her. She was coughing too much to answer though.

The paramedics and other cops came to the scene very shortly after, and checked Cruz out in the back of the bus. "He almost pressed your rib. I'd want to take you in," said Kim Zambrano, as she looked inside Cruz's mouth.
"Yeah, you should get looked at," said Alex Taylor, the other paramedic/firefighter.
Cruz paused and then looked at her and asked, "Can it wait a minute?"
The two paramedics looked at each other and then nodded. "Sure," said Taylor.

Cruz carefully hopped off the back of the bus, and walked towards Faith, who was standing by and waiting for Bosco to come back. "Officer Yokas," Cruz called, watching her turn around. "Speak to you a second?"

Faith turned around, and seemed a little timid. She said, "Look, Sargent, you really don't have to say anything about what happened in there- -" but she was cut off by Cruz with, "This is how you fix a problem." Faith looked at her surprised and retorted, "By yourself?? Without any back-up??"
"You don't run from 10-13 to 10-13. You go to the source," Cruz stated, boldly. Faith nodded and sarcastically said, "Well, you must be pretty proud of yourself."
"Before you start shootin your mouth off," Cruz began, "Why don't you read that report?"
"Excuse me?" Yokas asked.
"Yeah. The dying declaration. Your partner's the one who signed it. He's the only witness. So you wanna make something of it? He's the one who I put in front of it. Ain't gonna hurt me," she said, shaking her head, looking careless.

Just then, as Cruz walked away, Bosco came back to Faith, with a small grin on his face. "Make nice?" he asked.
She gave him an angry look and said, "I asked you at the house if it was true."
"What??" Bosco said, in confusion.
"You lied to me," she repeated.
"I didn't lie," he shook his head.
Yokas made a sarcastic laugh, because she couldn't believe he would still lie about it. "Bosco, she just told me!" Yokas said.

Bosco nodded and paused before saying, "You know what Yokas? Crime is down in that area, because of what we did." He started to pull out a small scrap of paper from his breast pocket and said, "Look here. Look at the numbers," as he held it up to her. She looked at him and raised her eyebrows, retorting, "You carry the numbers around with you?"
"He ordered the hit of a 12 year old kid," Bosco quickly told her, "We had to take him down." He paused and then continued, "We couldn't risk lettin a killer walk. You know that."

Faith stared at him for a minute, and then said, "She's no good," about Cruz. She started to walk away and he asked, "Where are you goin?"
"Why don't you ride with your girlfriend," she nodded at him, sarcastically. Faith got in the squad and drove off without him.

But Bosco managed to get to the hospital with another couple of cops in their squad. He wanted to check on Cruz.
