ELF RECIEVER FROM KIWA ELECTRONICS

by KB8QPE DE BILL

Bought an ELF receiver from Universal Electronics in Reynoldsburg, Ohio....Fixed up 17+ foot collapsibile painting poles (three of them to make a tripod) that I bought from Lowes in Chillicothe, Ohio....hung the antenna that comes with the Kiwa receiver under this, added a little Radio Shack mini-amplifier-speaker (cat number 277-100BC, only costs about 11 bucks, runs on a nine volt battery, or external power, and even a jack for yet another external speaker! a bargin and every ham should have one!) I set up at 5AM at the Great Seal State Park near Chillicothe, OH, one day last week, and the next day at a 300+ acre farm at sunset until about one in the morning. Very nifty. Whistlers, and fun out at the farm looking at satellites (saw one) and lots of shooting stars, at least 4 aircraft in the air at any time, many times more. The milky way from a nice dark location in Ross County. And such curious noises from the ELF (10-15 HERTZ!) receiver! You might have as much fun with some paint poles (real easy to set up and take down!) as I did....you might even use the same arrangement for your portable ham station antenna...nice for an inverted v when there's no trees around, and thanks to my friendly farmer pal, I now have a place for a beveredge antenna, and for my family and buddy hams to camp...If you give ELF listening a try, let me and the rest of us here know! It seems that the older I get, the more listening, and less transmitting I do. Reception is fun, too!!
