44 Attack

I've been running a 44 base defense with great success for several years. I mix a 62, 50 shade, and a 43 strong roll in as situational defenses. I coach the 120lbs (11yo) and 140lbs (12yo) divisions. I get some grief about the defense being too complicated for kids. Last season we pitched 3 shutouts and earned a Superbowl berth with it. I would like to exchange some Ideas and schemes with anyone interested.

The 44 by itself is difficult to run consistantly. With the right personnel however you can use it as a base and drop into a 62 or a 50 to give youself multiple looks.

What exactly are you looking for?

Stopping the run Without size

Size doesn't always matter. the 44 and it's transitions are geared toward stopping the run first. When in the 44 you will almost always have a blitz call. although you line up only 4 DL's you are actually using 5 with the blitzer. the offense doesn't always know where it is coming from.

Your biggest weakness is the middle of the line. It is important to have two DT's that can keep the middle boxed and not allow the guards to get off the line. most offensive linemen are tought "Man, Down, Backer". if the dt's can keep the last option checked then you can have great success against the run.

This is a "Mind your buisness Defense". Meaning it is not based on what the offense does rather based on individual primary and secondary responsibilities. When the entire defense plays their areas of responsibility it is a beautiful thing. Last seaon at the Bantam level we shutout 3 teams and held 2 others to 6 points. 5 of 8 games with dominating defense.

Takes a little pressure off the O.

I've beeen using this D for 5 yrs. and last year at the 11 & 12 yrs old division we shut out 5 teams and only allowed 5 TD's. I mix in a 5-4 and this works really well. There's not too many youth tams that are going to pass at this level so you can put 8-9 guys in the box. And even if they spread it out you can match up man-to-man.... Good luck
