hey there just wanted to know about the valve stem seals, i may have to replace them soon, how much does it cost to get them replaced by a mechanic, and is it easy to do it myself?

mine is gonan cost me only $50 to do, cos at the same time the head is gonna be shaved, so in situation wgher my engine is being built i might aswell get the vss replaced.

It is a very technical task if done at homw cos there is 2 ways of doing it.

1. remove the head completly, replace headgasket same time and get the head shaved/serviced. OR

2. like get pressuriesed air in the combustion chamber technique.

The second option is probably not suitable to your expertise.

If you get a mechanic to do it, expect to be charged the price of a headgasket job, which can be at least $ 400 - $500, Its not cheap. BUT

Are you sure its the seals, check your turbo, see if it has any play in it.

If you wanna save money, remove the head urself, get a new

Head gasket - $ 38
8 valve stem seals - cheap as
Machine head or just plain head service which includes new seals and the shave APPROX $ 125- $ 200

will getting the head shaved increase compression?? n yeah i do have some play in d turbo for quite some time now but only in the past couple months does it blow some smoke.. but it does happen on boost, and when i pull up smoke still comes out for a minute or so. if i give it a decent rev in neutral it'll smoke also...so what do you think it is.. the car rarely gets driven, like once a month more or less, but when i do drive it i get into it, bringing it near redline a fair bit. all help is appreciated.

Shaving the head at a certain level will give you more performance, if its cc's for compression ratio that would decide how much of increase in power youl get.

Check to see your engine oil level, if the engine is over filled the engine can blow smoke, overfilling might clog the breather box, interfere with crankcase ventilation, stop the oil drainage from the turbo, cause the turbo to overfill, and allow this extra oil to be forced out past the turbo seals.
