The cup is carried by the outer sleeve, and would compress the springs...

Response to So does the pump cup/head...

...like this, once the preload (determined by the central threaded stud) is exceeded. Note that the motion isn't to scale - it's exaggerated. The Paradigm piston probably doesn't move nearly this far.
