Life is relatively easy for the connecting link because the only large force it sees...

...is pure compression - no bending, no shearing.

But it's pretty meaningless to discuss materials and dimensions until you have at least a rough idea of the magnitude of the forces (e.g., psi x piston_area) that will be involved.
