Yes, and if the stock doesn't come out right, just make that can of Krylon something with some color to it and paint the darn thing. I've went that route on a plywood stock before.
Something else to consider is filling the imperfections. Small stuff I fill after the first coat of finish using a putty stick. Second (and other) coat seal it. Big stuff needs wood filler before staining. But filler doesn't always stain like wood. One reason I like Min Wax Poly Shades is you can put that stuff over just about anything and it's all the same color.
