I own an Outdoorsman, bought it from the Custom Shop a couple of years ago. The wood on mine is beech and is finished much better than you describe, with no damage.
If I'm not mistaken the stocks were made by a guy who sold Crosman after market products (can't recall his name.) So the stocks were sort of semi-custom affairs.
Looks like Crosman has farmed out the work to someone else; that's unacceptable quality and you should contact Crosman regarding an exchange.
