Steel bolt's o-ring seat is about one o-ring thickness farther forward than the brass bolt.
SO use the brass bolt.
Do agree that the tearing of the o-ring is probably due to a new sharp edge from where the port was enlarged to 4mm (and that may be too large to work well in a .177 as it is likely to catch and mangle the pellet skirt as it passes over).
