Anyone have any good ideas on how to capture the wasted energy?

If only 1/3 of the energy put into the spring shows up at the muzzle.

There is some low hanging fruit somewhere

Although, the good engineers in Detroit and else where struggle to do better with the legacy left by Herr Otto.
