Has anyone tried refinishing a 392 stock?

Picked one up recently and love most everything but the finish on the imitation walnut stock. Seems like they got half way done with the sanding before slapping a finish on it. Wondering what kind of results others have had refinishing these.

On another note, boy did the finish on the metal go down hill too! Mine has chips where each of the pins was installed at front. Not as pretty as my old Bluestreak but I must admit, more accurate.

I have heard horror stories of folks trying to get a decent finish back on the junk wood they use now. In the good ole days as was for Streaks, it is sand and finish, and the beautiful walnut does the rest. In todays stocks you have to deal with the blotchy uneaven stain penetration of soft junk wood.
